Bob Bardell

Bob Bardell, 63, died Sept. 3, 2005, of heart damage, caused from an earlier severe heart attack.

He was a former special writer for the Ellis County Press and first joined the staff in 1994. He began by covering Red Oak news for the Weekly Review in Red Oak. Soon after, he began to write for the Press, as well, and the two papers merged in 1996.

Robert H. Carraway Jr.

Robert H. Carraway Jr., 93, died Aug. 29, 2005, in Fort Worth.

After serving in the U.S. Navy in World War II, Carraway returned to Mineola as publisher of the Mineola Monitor and the Wood County Record. In 1961, he purchased the Quinn Printing Company in Fort Worth and served as its president until his retirement in 1979.

Estelle Craddock

Estelle Craddock, 93, of Gorman, died Sept. 17, 2005, at the Comanche County Hospital.

She was a homemaker and worked at the Gorman Progress for 24 years and was a correspondent for the Abilene Reporter-News.

Ed Curda

Ed Curda, 58, died Sept. 4, 2005, of head injuries he suffered in a fall at the Pecos Benedictine Monastery in Pecos, N.M. He had once worked for the El Paso Times and the Temple Daily Telegram but had given up his career in journalism to become a monk in 1984.

Melvin E. Fenoglio

Melvin E. Fenoglio, 82, died Sept. 10, 2005, in Fort Worth.

He was a news writer for the Sherman Democrat. In 1949, he returned to Montague and entered the education field.

Jack Clark Gross

Jack Clark Gross, 75, died Aug. 24, 2005.

He was a reporter for the Wilson County News after retiring as director of the Weslaco Chamber of Commerce and public relations specialist for the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen.

Mary Kegg

Mary Kegg, 80, died Sept. 11, 2005, at her home in Nassau Bay. Since retiring from newspapers and writing in 2000 she had fought numerous medical battles.

She joined the staff of The Citizen in Clear Lake in 1983 and was a food and cultural arts columnist. She also owned her own bookstore in Houston and worked for bookstores for many years.

Leonard D. Petty

Leonard D. “Dub” Petty died Aug. 21, 2005, at his home near Jewett.

He owned the Calvert Tribune and Bremond Press. After his mother died in 1964, he took over the family’s Jewett Messenger, which he continued to operate until 2000.

Gay McFarland-Scarborough

Gay Elliott McFarland-Scarborough, 59, died Sept. 2, 2005, after a 15-year battle with breast cancer.

She was a columnist and writer for the Houston Post from 1968-78 and later worked for the Houston Chronicle and other Houston area organizations. She wrote the syndicated “Home Focus” column.

George F. Rigotti

George F. Rigotti, 84, of Sinton, died Sept. 8, 2005.

After serving in the U.S. Army in World War II, he started working for the Denton Record-Chronicle. He later was a newspaper editor with the San Patricio Publishing Co., and wrote a weekly column, “Aside,” until his retirement in 1992.

Ruby L. Stell

Ruby LaNell “Nell” Stell, 70, died Sept. 18, 2005, in Wichita Falls.

She became a Stanley Home Products dealer in 1963 and received numerous awards and recognition. She was the longtime Buffalo Springs correspondent for the Clay County Leader. 

Russell Tinsley

Russell Tinsley, 72, died Sept. 3, 2005, at his home in Mason after a lengthy illness.

Tinsley was the Austin American-Statesman’s first outdoors editor, a job he held for 30 years.

He was a founding editor of Texas Fish & Game magazine, where he was a contributing editor until his death. He also was an outdoors author. He was on the board of the Texas Outdoor Writers Association.

Buena M. Wright

Buena M. Wright, 98, died Sept. 4, 2005.

She was the wife of Elmer S. Wright, who died in 1973 and published the Sweetwater Reporter from 1945-70. Her husband also published the Breckenridge American and was active with West Texas Press Association.
