Newsmakers

Sidney Ballard joined the Edgewood Enterprise and Grand Saline Sun as a staff writer and photographer.

Daniel Clifton was promoted to editor of the River Cities Tribune in Marble Falls and free sister newspaper the Picayune. He first came to the newspaper in 1998.

Jeremy Corley is the new editor of the Van Alstyne Leader and Anna Melissa Tribune. Corley takes over after spending a year and a half at The Bryan-College Station Eagle. He previously was editor of The Olney Enterprise.

Ellen Foster, wife of Waco Citizen publisher Bill Foster, was injured Sept. 15 when she flipped her Ford Explorer on Interstate 35 while apparently trying to avoid an 18-wheeler that had a blow-out. Ellen Foster was on the way to Hillsboro to pick up newspapers when the accident occurred.

James William “Jimmy” Galvan has been named managing editor of The Jasper Newsboy. Galvan assumed the position following the move to correspondent status for Julie Webb, contributing editor. Webb made the transition in order to spend more time on family matters.

Galvan brings more than 20 years experience as a newspaper reporter, writer and editor and most recently was with the Stephenville Empire-Tribune.

Kaycee Kendall is a new reporter for The Wimberley View. She has worked for the Corpus Christi Caller-Times as a copy editor and a guest entertainment columnist.

Jeannie Millender was promoted to community editor of the Frisco Enterprise. She had been staff photographer and starting working for parent company Star Community Newspapers in 1996.

The National Newspaper Association named two Texans to the board during the group’s 119th annual convention Sept. 28-30 in Milwaukee.

Jerry Tidwell, publisher of the Hood County News, was elected vice president. Tidwell had been treasurer for NNA. Tidwell was Texas Press Association president in 1996-97. He has been involved with West Texas Press Association for 25 years and North and East Texas Press Association for 22 years and was president of NETPA.

Roy Eaton, publisher of the Wise County Messenger, was appointed to the NNA board as an at-large director, representing NNA past presidents. Eaton was president of NNA in 1996-97 and of TPA in 1987-88.

Also Jerry Reppert, publisher of the Gazette-Democrat in Anna, Ill., became president of NNA. Reppert succeeds Mike Buffington, editor of the Jackson Herald in Jefferson, Ga., who became immediate past president.

Steve Ramos is the new managing editor of The Community News in Aledo. Since 1993 Ramos has served in management roles for newspapers in Texas, Nevada and Georgia. Most recently he was managing editor of the Moore County News-Press.

Laura Reeves joined the Stamford American as the new editor. Reeves attended Baylor University for two years and Angelo State University for one year, all in pursuit of a bachelor of business administration.

Laurel Scott accepted the assistant managing editor position at the San Angelo Standard-Times. She spent the last 17 years at the San Diego (Calif.) Union-Tribune.

Robin O’Shaugnessy has been named staff photographer at the Amarillo Globe-News, beginning her new job just in time to help with coverage of the arrival of Hurricane Katrina refugees in Amarillo. She previously spent five years at the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal and also worked at the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung.

Wally Simmons retired from the Atlanta Citizens-Journal after 47 years in the newspaper business. He spent the last four years as sports editor of the weekly. He started his career in 1958 at the Texarkana Gazette and had worked at newspapers all over Texas from the Rio Grande Valley to the Panhandle.

Brad Stutzman, a Round Rock Leader reporter and columnist from 1992-99, returned to the newspaper as editor. Stutzman most recently worked as a reporter at the Temple Daily Telegram’s Belton office.

The Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas recognized several newspapers for outstanding service and publication of FFA and agriculture science issues. The 2005 VATAT Outstanding Newspaper Award winners are: Comanche Chief; The Hometown Press, Winnie; Whitesboro News Record; Wimberley View; Lone Star Eagle  in Marshall; and the Teague Chronicle.

Leon Watson has been named circulation manager for the Pampa News. He previously worked six years at the Amarillo Globe-News.
