ObituariesKeith GuthrieKeith Guthrie, 86, of Taft died at his home Sept. 12, 2004 after a long illness. After graduation from Texas Christian University in 1940, Guthrie purchased the Harris County News, a weekly in Tomball. Guthrie moved to Taft in 1950 when he purchased the Taft Tribune, Mathis News and the Odem-Edroy Times. He later purchased the Portland News, Duval County Facts and Orange Grove Observer. He sold the newspaper publishing business in 1970 and spent the next 12 years teaching journalism and photography at Gregory-Portland High School. Guthrie wrote the first complete history of San Patricio County in 1986. Joe Bob FishJoe Bob Fish, 51, of Alanreed, died Sept. 9, 2004. Fish worked in McLean and served as editor for three years of The McLean News. Walter McLeanWalter McLean, 90, died Sept. 10, 2004 in Brownwood. He started his newspaper career at the Brownwood Bulletin in 1935 in the circulation department. In 1958 he moved to become the advertising manager of the Del Rio News-Herald.
On Jan. 1, 1963 he became publisher of the Port Lavaca Wave and Calhoun County Times. In 1973 he returned to Del Rio as advertising executive and later retired in 1988.
Lee Milazzo Jr.Lee Christopher Milazzo Jr., 62, died Sept. 9, 2004. He was the longtime book critic for The Dallas Morning News and a teacher, bibliophile, collector, historian and editor. He had a long association with Southern Methodist University. Charles E. MurrayCharles E. “Charlie” Murray, 79, died Sept. 4, 2004 in his home from effects of strokes. He was an assistant managing editor production at the Houston Chronicle for nearly 30 years until retiring in 1991. In the 1940s, as editor of the student newspaper at Texas A&M, he created a stir by editorializing for admitting women to the school. In 1948, Murray joined the Bryan Daily Eagle. In 1953, he moved to the Houston Press as a copy editor and eventually was a director and assistant managing editor until the Scripps-Howard newspaper chain closed the Press in 1964.
