Olan Ray Brewer

Olan Ray Brewer, 77, died Oct. 27, 2007, after a brief illness.

He started his career as a reporter for the Tyler Courier Times and in 1954 left for the Houston Chronicle. In 1960 he began a lengthy career in politics and founded Brewer Communications in Austin.


John Hollis

John Hollis, 81, died Oct. 3, 2007, from complications from diabetes.

He was a sports writer and editor in Houston for nearly 40 years. He joined The Houston Press in 1947. He went to The Houston Post in 1954 and was sports editor there from 1972-75 and left in 1985 to work for the Houston Boxing Association.

Marie Moore

Marie Moore, 83, died Oct. 25, 2007, in a New Braunfels hospital.

She was one of the first women at a Houston newspaper to become a copy editor. She joined the Houston Chronicle in 1949 and worked there until 1955 when she joined The Houston Post as a reporter.

She and her husband John Moore, a Post columnist, left the Post in 1962 to establish the Friendswood Journal and began acquiring newspapers in Pearland, Webster, Alvin and Nassau Bay. They sold their newspapers in 1980.


Faye Plank

Faye Plank, 94, died October 9, 2007. She was a journalist for the Stateline Tribune in Farwell and the Clovis (N.M.) New Journal. She spent 20 years at lifestyle editor at the Dalhart Texan.


Bobby Walker

Bobby Joe Walker, 77, died, Oct. 22, 2007, after a battle with cancer.

Walker was in graphic arts for 50 years and started with the Van Alstyne Leader as a teenager.

He purchased the Howe Enterprise in 1966, after serving as managing editor of The Nocona News.

He sold the Enterprise, today called Texoma Enterprise, in 1974. In 1975, he established Allied Printing and Office Supply in Howe, which he operated until his retirement in 1987.
