NewsmakersThe Baytown Sun welcomed its new teen reporting team with two students from Ross S. Sterling High School, one from Robert E. Lee High School and one from Baytown Christian Academy — Shelby Olive, Stephanie Whitley, Eugene Martir and Katelyn Harbison. -- Henri Brickey, health reporter for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, has been selected for the 2006 Texas Mental Health Media Award for his Aug. 3 article, “Program addresses depression among senior citizens.” -- The Galveston County Daily News took top honors in the print quality contest sponsored by Southern Newspaper Publishers Association. The daily won in the 25,000 to 50,000-circulation category. -- The Hood County News took second place in the literacy, non-daily newspapers category of the National Newspaper Association’s 2006 Best of Newspaper in Education Contest. There were 54 entries from 22 states. -- Kaycee Kendall recently joined the Beeville Bee-Picayune as features editor. She worked as a copy editor and reporter at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times and Wimberley View before arriving in Beeville. -- Roy N. Kent is the new editor of the Deer Park Progress. Kent was promoted from his position as managing editor of sister paper The Pasadena Citizen. Longtime editor Rob Vanya moved on to a position with the San Jacinto College District. -- Tracy Hobson Lehmann received the John G. Flowers Award from the Texas Society of Architects at its annual convention in Dallas. Lehmann is the San Antonio Express-News Home & Garden editor. The Honors Committee of the TSA cited Lehmann’s weekly feature Spaces. -- Mike Marino joined the Seminole Sentinel as news reporter. He came from Michigan and worked in radio for more than 30 years. -- Priscilla Rider joined the Andrews County News as lifestyles editor. She transferred from Andrews Office Supply and replaced Sherilyn Brown. - Tim Ritter has been named sports editor of the Plainview Daily Herald. He came from the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal where he was sports copy editor. He also has worked in sports at the Amarillo Globe-News and Longview News Journal. -- Lester T. Simpson, publisher of the Amarillo Globe-News, has been elected to the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association Board of Directors. -- Lorena Turnbow joined the Sweetwater Reporter as a writer covering Nolan and Mitchell counties and Colorado City. -- The 2006 Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas, Outstanding Newspaper Award Winners are: Abernathy Weekly Review; The Bellville Times; The Dublin Citizen; Herald Democrat, Sherman/Denison; Frankston Citizen; and Pleasanton Express. -- Gary Welch has been promoted to general manager of the Copperas Cove Leader-Press. Welch still will handle his duties as advertising director along with the added responsibilities of general manager.
