Joe Abernathy

Joe Abernathy, 42, died Oct. 26, 2003 of a sudden illness. He was a former copy editor and pioneer in writing about the Internet while at the Houston Chronicle from 1983 to 1993 when he left to become senior editor at PC Magazine.

Al Brumley

Al Brumley, 40, died Oct. 28, 2003 of complications related to a brain tumor. He was a radio columnist and arts writer for The Dallas Morning News where he had worked since 1987.

Peter S. Calisch

Peter S. Calisch, 75, died Oct. 10, 2003 from a ruptured aorta. In 1979 he came to the San Antonio Express-News as a copy editor, retiring in 1994. He also worked for dailies in New York and Massachusetts.

Roy Linson

Roy Grace Linson, 64, died Sept. 30, 2003 in her sleep in Longview. She started her journalism career in 1980 as an intern with the Longview News Journal after a mid-life career change. She worked as business editor, East Texas editor and Sunday magazine editor and during her last stint was receptionist and writer of the Longview Today column.

Margaret Montgomery

Margaret Montgomery, 93, died Oct. 17, 2003 in an assisted living facility in Hillsboro. She was a retired columnist from The (Conroe) Courier where she penned “65 and Holding,” a humorous slice-of-life column.

Ned Riddle

Ned Riddle, 81, died Oct. 13, 2003 at a Dallas nursing home after being hospitalized for a series of strokes. He created the syndicated cartoon “Mr. Tweedy,” which ran in more than 300 newspapers between 1954-88. He worked at The Dallas Morning News for 13 years as an artist.

Ruby Speer

Ruby Lee Cravey Speer, 79, died Oct. 5, 2003 after a lengthy illness. She was a longtime columnist for the Jewett Messenger and Centerville News and postmaster in Concord for 46 years.

T. Morris Willson

T. Morris Willson, 84, died Oct. 11, 2003 after suffering from cancer and emphysema. He was a reporter and columnist for 33 years with the San Antonio Light and wrote “The Bexar Facts” column for more than 20 years. He retired in 1986.
