NewsmakersBen Barkley has been promoted to publisher of the Sweetwater Reporter. He brings nearly 16 years of experience, including four years in management. Barkley will continue to serve as managing editor, a post he has held since 2004. -- Bob Belcher was promoted to assistant editor at the Corsicana Daily Sun, where he has worked for 14 months and has written a column since 2004. -- Emory Bounds joined the Elgin Courier as a general assignment reporter/managing editor. He came from Maine where he worked for Mainely Newspapers Inc. -- Lisa Chappell was promoted to publisher of The Greenville Herald-Banner and Commerce Journal. She had been advertising director since November 2005 and joined the staffs in 2003 as an advertising sales representative. She replaces Bill Morgan, who accepted the publisher’s position at The Cullman (Ala.) Times. -- Chris Cobler, a former editor of the Greeley (Colo.) Tribune, has been named editor of the Victoria Advocate. Cobler also worked in Kansas, South Dakota and at the Denton Record-Chronicle. He replaced Scot Walker who relocated to Bryan. -- Mark Collette was chosen as The Galveston County Daily News’ mainland editor. Collette worked for the Tyler Morning Telegraph for nearly five years before The Daily News. -- Harry Darby and his wife Corbet welcomed Evan Sakihara Darby April 20, 2007, at 7:05 p.m. He weighed 6 lbs, 5 oz and was 19 inches long. Darby is publisher of The Vindicator in Liberty. -- The Denver City Press hired three new employees. Vikki Lamar joined the staff as reporter, photographer and page makeup person. Jeremy Dains joined as the sports reporter. Kristi Roberson is advertising director. -- Jenise Diaz, chief financial officer of The Monitor in McAllen, was promoted to regional controller within Freedom Communications Southwest Division, which includes The Monitor; Valley Morning Star in Harlingen; The Brownsville Herald; Odessa American; and several other ancillary publications. Diaz has been with The Monitor for 16 years. -- Michael C. Duke was named associate editor of the Jewish Herald Voice in Houston. Duke is the grandson of owners Joe and Jeanne Samuels and the son of editor Vicki Samuels. Duke has been with the paper since June 2004. -- Robert N. Bob Dunegan joined the Cleveland Advocate as a reporter. He had been a contributing writer for several months. -- Mark Engebretson is the new editor at The Ballinger Ledger. He also is editor at sister newspaper The Winters Enterprise. -- Jamie Fuentes joined the Fort Stockton Pioneer as sports writer and photographer. He previously worked at the local hospital. -- Linda Fury joined the Victoria Advocate on Jan. 19 as circulation sales and retention manager. She has been in the business for more than 20 years and worked for Freedom Communications for 15 years . -- Adrienne Graham left the Frankston Citizen staff as editor just two-weeks shy of her one year anniversary to join the Tyler Morning Telegraph as reporter. -- Erica Hall joined The Huntsville Item as its newest reporter. Hall previously served as a reporter for The Tomball Tribune. -- H.H. Pancho Howze has joined The Fayette County Record as a news writer and reporter. He was a curator at Winedale the past five years for the Center for American History of the University of Texas at Austin. -- Cedric Iglehart is the new editor of The Belton Journal. -- Dana D. Jameson is the new editor of the Castro County News. She took over from longtime editor Davey Ann Browder. Jameson was managing editor at the Olton Enterprise and before that production manager at the Friona Star. -- Jayson Larson joined the Mount Pleasant Daily Tribune as sports editor. Larson has worked at dailies in Corsicana and later Athens where he served as a staff writer until becoming the news editor and then editor. -- Art Lawler joined the Cedar Creek Pilot. Lawler spent five years with the Athens Daily Review as a reporter before leaving for a similar position at the Longview News-Journal. He began his career in newspapers in 1970. -- Archie McBride is the new advertising director for The Gonzales Inquirer. -- The Paris News announced staff changes. Veteran journalist Charles Richards returned as a reporter replacing Josh Edwards, who joined the Denton Record-Chronicle as a copy editor. Bill Hankins rejoined on a part-time basis earlier this year as a reporter. Sam Craft has been promoted to photo editor and will supervise full-time, part-time, freelance and intern photographers. -- Sheila Sanders is the new bookkeeper at the Free Press in Diboll. -- Brett Thacker, managing editor of the San Antonio Express-News, was elected president of the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors. -- Veta Weaver is the new general manager and editor for the Grand Saline Sun and Edgewood Enterprise. -- Sandra Zaragoza joined the Austin Business Journal as a staff writer. She has spent the past six years as a staff writer at the Dallas Business Journal.
