News BriefsTatum weekly gets new ownerTATUM — Dee Nell Matthews Swanner sold the Trammel Trace Tribune to Byron and Amy Haden of Jefferson. Swanner’s uncle, Cecil Williams, started the Tribune 31 years ago. Swanner planned to continue her column “Dee Nells Country Kitchen,” and assist the new owners with “What’s Happening.” Whitesboro changes hands after 34 yearsWHITESBORO — For the first time in 34 years, the Whitesboro News-Record hit the street without Jim and Xina Davison listed as publishers. On Jan. 31 the Davisons sold the News-Record to Scott Wood of Muenster. Scott and his wife Deborah also own the Muenster Enterprise. The Davisons helped usher the newspaper through numerous technological changes since purchasing the News-Record on July 1, 1973. Austin, Amarillo & Dallas Web sites earn NAA awardsAUSTIN — Three Texas dailies won awards in the Newspaper Association of America’s Digital Edge Awards. Austin360.com, the Austin American-Statesman’s entertainment Web site, was named the best local guide or entertainment site among U.S. newspapers with circulation 75,000 to 250,000. The award comes after a string of initiatives at Austin360 for its 10th anniversary in 2007. Traffic on Austin360.com increased by more than 21 million page views in 2007. The Amarillo Globe-News and amarillo.com won two awards. It was the second year in a row the Globe-News and its Web site have won Most Innovative Use of Interactive Media, less than 75,000 circulation, for PigskinReview.com. The Globe-News also won for Best Digital Advertising Program for newspapers under 75,000 circulation, for a program that allowed online readers to compete against staff weekly picks for the winners of coming football games. The Dallas Morning News’ Real Estate Video Tours won in Best Digital Classified Innovation circulation greater than 250,000. Brownwood launches re-designed Web siteBROWNWOOD — The Brownwood Bulletin launched a re-designed Web site at www.brownwoodbulletin.com. The redesign improvements include readers’ comment sections for specific stories and columns and community forums for readers to upload photos and stories, Bill Crist, the Bulletin’s general manager, said. The Bulletin launched its Web site in 1999. In January, the site averaged more than 4,478 visitors a day, with an average 23,767 page views. Those figures are up more than 300 average daily visitors and 8,000 daily page views over January 2006. Belo completes spin-offDALLAS — A. H. Belo Corporation Feb. 8 completed its spin-off from Belo Corp and shares of the new company began regular trading on Feb. 11 on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol AHC. The new company is a newspaper division that includes The Dallas Morning News and Denton Record Chronicle. A. H. Belo also owns and manages various Web sites associated with the newspaper properties, as well as certain niche products and direct mail and commercial printing businesses. Hearst joins big online ad shopping networkNEW YORK — Four of the nation’s top publishing companies recently unveiled a venture to provide one-stop shopping for advertisers interested in affluent consumers nationwide who visit local newspaper and TV station Web sites, USA Today reported. Tribune, Hearst (which owns six Texas dailies), The New York Times and Gannett — are backing the new company quadrantONE. The sites it represents reach about 50 million unique visitors a month, including 27 of the 30 largest markets.
