James Grimes

James Fulton Grimes, 58, died Feb. 21, 2007, at his San Felipe residence.

Grimes was publisher of The Madisonville Meteor when Granite Publications bought it in 1990. When Granite Publications bought The Sealy News in 1991, he was transferred and named publisher there.

After leaving The Sealy News, Grimes worked other journalism jobs before he became the sales manager at Outdoor World Bass Pro Shops two years ago.

Metta Wenona Miller

Metta Wenona Miller, 92, died Jan. 13, 2007, in the Nocona Hospital. She began writing a column called “Do Memory Lane” for the Saint Jo Tribune in the mid-1980s.

James M. Moroney Jr.

James M. “Jimmy” Moroney Jr., 85, died Feb. 18, 2007.

He was the last surviving grandson of George Bannerman Dealey, who founded The News at the behest of Col. A.H. Belo in 1885. Moroney’s son, James M. Moroney III, is publisher and CEO of The News.

Moroney joined The News full time as a reporter after leaving the Navy in 1946.

He became assistant treasurer of Belo in 1951 and was elected to the board of directors in 1952. He was named treasurer in 1955 and vice president and treasurer in 1960.

In 1970, he was promoted to executive vice president of Belo Corp. and president and CEO of Belo Broadcasting Corp. Four years later, he was named chairman of Belo Broadcasting.

Moroney served as a director for the American Newspaper Publishers Association, Audit Bureau of Circulations, Newspaper Advertising Bureau, Newsprint South Inc. and Texas Daily Newspaper Association.

In 1980, he was elected president and CEO of The News and president and chief operating officer of Belo.

In January 1983, Moroney became CEO of Belo, while retaining the title of president. In April 1984, he also was elected chairman of the board.

Moroney retired from Belo on Dec. 31, 1986, at age 65, but remained on the company ’s board of directors, where he was chairman of the executive committee. He retired as a Belo director in May 2000.

Shirley Schwaller

Shirley Files Schwaller, 60, died Jan. 30, 2007.

She worked as a reporter and editor during the 1970s and 1980s for the Houston Business Journal, the Dallas Business Journal and later as business editor for the Dallas Times Herald.
