NewsmakersT.J. Aulds left The Galveston County Daily News’ mainland editor role to join KHOU-TV Channel 11 in Houston. Aulds previously was editor the Texas City Sun, which merged with the News in fall 2004. He had worked for Southern Newspapers off and on for 12 years. -- Donald Borucki is the new regional director of advertising for Houston Community Newspapers. Borucki has more than 30 years of newspaper advertising and sales management experience with Gannett, McClatchy, MediaNews and impreMedia. -- The Chandler Brownsboro Area Chamber of Commerce honored The Chandler Brownsboro Statesman as “Business of the Year” on Feb. 8. The Statesman published its first edition on Feb. 16, 1976. In September 2006, Bill Woodall, owner of Bluebonnet Publishing in Kilgore, purchased the newspaper. Since the purchase color has been added and circulation has increased by more than 30 percent. Bette Jones was the first employee 30 years ago, and is still employed as typesetter, receptionist and many other duties. Chad Wilson is sports editor and page and ad designer. -- Terri Burke, editor of the Abilene Reporter-News since 1999, left March 1. Barton Cromeens, who has been managing editor for 2 1/2 years, will be interim editor. Burke joined E.W. Scripps Co. in 1996 . -- Bullard Banner News columnist Antoinette Jackson was featured on the local CBS 19 news during the special series, “Survivor Stories: How I Beat Cancer.” Jackson is an eight-year breast cancer survivor. -- Robbie Byrd recently joined The Huntsville Item as news editor. Byrd previously served as editor of the South Alabama News, a 3,500 circulation weekly in Greenville, Ala. -- Kelly Gooch, a senior at Texas Tech University, has joined the Plainview Daily Herald staff as an editorial intern. Gooch is majoring in journalism and will graduate in May. -- Karan A. Heffelfinger is a new columnist for the Fort Stockton Pioneer with a weekly column called “Karan’s Korner.” She came from Lansford, Penn., where she taught for more than 30 years. -- The Hill Country News in Cedar Park announced that Barry Moore and Annie Snodgrass joined the staff. Also, Ashley Richards left the News to join the staff at the Laredo Morning Times. -- The Texas House this session will recognize eight current and former Dallas Morning News photographers — Irwin Thompson, Michael Ainsworth, Melanie Burford, Barbara Davidson, Tom Fox, Brad Loper, Michael Mulvey and Smiley N. Pool — with resolutions honoring their Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of Hurricane Katrina and other news. --
The Liberty Vindicator announced two staff changes. Laura Oakley was added as office manager. She came to the Vindicator from The Progress in Anahuac, where she worked as office manager. Lindsey Vaculin joined the staff as managing editor. She was formerly the reporter at The Sealy News. -- Sherry Long left the Ellis County Press to begin working as a general assignment reporter at the Times-Leader in Wilkes-Barre, Penn. She started at The Press in 2003, left in September 2004 to work for the Henderson Daily News and returned in January 2006. -- Bill Morgan, publisher of the Greenville Herald-Banner, has been named publisher of The Cullman Times in Alabama. Morgan was named publisher in Greenville in March 2005, after serving as publisher in Athens. -- John E. Newhouse II is the new publisher of The Beaumont Enterprise. Newhouse joined the newspaper from Gannett Co., where he most recently served as president and publisher of the Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Miss., from August 2005 until November 2006. Aubrey Webb, former publisher, will continue in an advisory role. -- Dave Pasley joined the Boerne Star full time in February. He retired as director of planning for the city of San Antonio last year. -- Denton Ramsey joined the Marlin Democrat as managing editor. His prior jobs included stints with Grand Prairie Today as sports editor as well as the Plano Star Courier and Allen American as sports editor. -- Bitty Reilly has joined The Star Group as a writer for the South Tarrant Star. She has worked 14 years, mainly with The Dallas Morning News in circulation. -- Kimberly Rodriguez joined the Elgin Courier as a full time reporter/photographer. She received her bachelor’s in communication arts, specializing in journalism, from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio in May. -- Misty Shultz is the new county beat reporter for the Cleburne Times-Review. She replaces Kyle P. Whitecotton, who left in December. -- Kevin Sherrington, SportsDay columnist for The Dallas Morning News, was named National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Texas Sportswriter of the Year. He has been a staff writer since 1985 and won for the second time. -- Lee Stahle has been promoted to assistant circulation manager at the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung. Stahle is a three-year employee and previously served as district manager in the circulation department. -- Darlene Tise has been named managing editor of the Jackson County Herald-Tribune. Tise began at the newspaper in 1987 on a part-time basis in the Ganado branch. When the branch closed in July 2001, Tise transferred to Edna where she worked as the Ganado news editor. She had been editor of farm news and the Around the County column. -- Mark Thormaehlen is the new controller for Hartman Newspapers, L.P. and the Fort Bend Herald. He is a certified public accountant and most recently was controller for Strategic Materials Inc., a glass recycling company in Houston. -- D.D. Turner was promoted to managing editor from news editor of the Marshall News Messenger. She began her career in 1986 at The Rockport Pilot. She succeeds Mike Elswick, who joined the Longview News-Journal. -- Bill Weaver is the new group publisher for Star Community Newspapers in the Dallas Fort-Worth area. Weaver had worked for almost 32 years with Pennysaver Publications in Pittsburgh. -- Raymond W. Wilkerson has been named managing editor of the Temple Daily Telegram. Wilkerson was executive editor of The Bryan-College Station Eagle for seven years. -- The Victoria Advocate and Victoria College selected Scott Reese Willey and T.J. Aulds as winners in the Jim Lehrer Awards for Journalism. Willey, Beeville Bee-Picayune staff writer and editor, won in the small newspaper category for a story he wrote in September titled, “Why are our doctors leaving?” Aulds, formerly of The Galveston County Daily News, won in the large newspaper category for a story about the aftermath of the BP refinery explosion in Texas City. Each earned a plaque and a $1,000 cash prize. The small newspaper recipient works for newspapers with circulation’s 25,000 or less. The large newspaper recipient works for newspapers with more than 25,000 subscribers.
