ObituariesMike Haikin Mike Haikin, 85, died May 1, 2007. Haikin wrote for The Dallas Morning News, The Houston Post, The Beaumont Enterprise and the military camp newspaper at Fort Lewis, Wash., where he spent 34 months in the Army during World War II. He also was a columnist for the Jewish Herald Voice. Joe Kelly Memorial services for Joe Kelly, 92, were held May 19, 2007, at Westminster Chapel in Lubbock. He moved to Lubbock in 1947 and joined the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal as a sports writer and later sports editor. He was best known for his column “Between the Lines.” Andrew McBeath Andrew Wilhite McBeath, 84, died May 17, 2007, after a lengthy illness. He was a longtime newspaper owner and publisher and the son of Mittie Agnes Greene and Joaquin Sylvester McBeath, who owned and published newspapers in Texas. He worked on newspapers in Dallas and Corpus Christi before purchasing the Eagle Pass News Guide, which he owned and published until retiring and leaving a son, Rex McBeath, in charge of the operation while he assumed residence in San Antonio. Jewel McKenzie Jewel Gwendolyn Price Ross McKenzie, 90, died May 24, 2007. She was one of the first black journalists hired by The Dallas Morning News and one of the first to work in an editing position. She also was a teacher from 1944-67 and had a master’s in English from Howard University and a master’s in communications from the University of Texas at Austin. Joe Edward Mojica Joe Edward Mojica, 35, died May 11, 2007, in a two-vehicle wreck near Thrall that also claimed the life of his 6-year-old daughter, Jeanie. Mojica was a former news and sports reporter for the Thorndale Champion. He and his daughter were killed about 5 p.m. on U.S. 79 two miles east of Thrall in Williamson County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Troopers said the two were traveling east in a 1993 Honda Accord that Mojica was driving when the car moved into the westbound lane and struck a 2002 GMC Sierra pickup being driven by Garland Eugene Miller, 49, of Elgin. Stella Orozco Stella Orozco died April 21, 2007. Orozco started working for the Commercial Recorder in San Antonio on June 8, 1951, fresh out of high school. For 54 years, she served many owners of the Commercial Recorder in her position as legal editor and corporate “grand master” of Prime Time Inc. She received a TPA Golden 50 Award in 2004. Stella Ann Perez Stella Ann Perez, 67, died May 7, 2007. Perez wrote the “Senior News” column in The West News for many years. She also served as reporter for SPJST Lodge #6. Bill Wagner Bill Wagner, 85, died May 7, 2007, after a lengthy illness that affected his central nervous system. Wagner was executive editor and vice president of the San Antonio Evening News when the paper merged with the San Antonio Express in 1984. After flying 35 combat missions as a B-17 navigator in World War II, his first news job was with the Houston Chronicle. During his 27 years in San Antonio, he served in every capacity from reporter to city editor. He also taught journalism at Concordia College in Austin. Mary Sue Wood Mary Sue Anderson Eakes Wood, 83, died April 30, 2007. She served as mayor of Happy for six years and wrote “Happy News” for The Canyon News.
