ObituariesRobert Allan Burns Robert Allan “Bob” Burns, 83, died May 5, 2006, in Richardson where he made his home with his son, Richard. His first newspaper job was as photographer with the Marshall News Messenger from 1950-69. He made one career move to the Texarkana Gazette in 1969, and retired from there in 1989 to live in Austin. Elise Kowert Elise Louise Weber Kowert, 91, died May 29, 2006, in Fredericksburg. She and Arthur H. Kowert, president of Texas Press Association in 1953-54, were married on Nov. 11, 1937. He preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 2003. She started working as women’s editor of the Fredericksburg Standard in 1946 and also wrote feature stories, most of them of a historic nature. She retired in December 1987 but continued to write occasional features pertaining to local history. In 1977, she and her husband published “Old Homes and Buildings” of Fredericksburg. A second book, “Historic Homes In and Around Fredericksburg,” was published in 1980. Arnold Velez Arnold Velez, 40, died in his downtown Fort Worth home May 13, 2006. In 1994, he was the first publisher of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s bilingual publication, which became Diario La Estrella. He began working at the Star-Telegram in the late 1980s. In April 1995, Velez left La Estrella to take a job with Chicago-based Patrick Media Group. He became president of Clear Channel Outdoor Dallas Fort Worth.
