NewsmakersThe Andrews County News announced two staff changes. Jeff Blackmon was hired as the news editor. Blackmon was sports editor of the Hood County News from 2001 until leaving in 2004 to join the Llano News as assistant publisher. Sherilyn Brown came on board as lifestyles editor to replace Toni Kirkpatrick. -- Joshua Benton, Holly Hacker and Herb Booth of The Dallas Morning News took the top prize in the National Awards for Education Reporting for their investigation of teacher lead cheating in Texas public schools “Children Left Behind: Corruption and Cheating in Texas.” The winning piece was chosen for the Fred M. Hechinger Grand Prize for Distinguished Education Report ing from among 503 entries in print, electronic and online media. The prize is the only independently judged award of its kind in the United States, and entries were limited to work published or broadcast in 2004. Winners receive a $1,000 cash prize and a trophy. -- Hal Braswell has been hired as editor of The Light and Champion in Center. Braswell most recently served as managing editor of The Tribune, a weekly newspaper in Logansport, La., and has nearly 20 years of experience. -- Bill Crist was named interim publisher of the Stephenville Empire-Tribune following the departure of Mike Coggins. Crist began his career in Stephenville after graduating in 1991 from Texas Christian University. He also has worked in Waxahachie and came from the Brownwood Bulletin. -- Lisa Falkenberg, a Dallas-based writer for The Associated Press, is joining the Houston Chronicle and will be based in Austin. -- Jason Gibbs has been promoted to assistant news editor of the El Campo Leader-News. He started at the Leader-News Nov. 19, 2001, and had worked in Abilene. -- The Fort Stockton Pioneer is fully staffed with the addition of reporter Charlie Galindo Jr. and sales person Jared Smith. Galindo is from Alice and is a recent graduate of Texas A&M. Smith is from Fort Stockton and is a senior at Sul Ross State University in Alpine. -- Tiffany Lara has joined the Navasota Examiner as advertising consultant replacing sales associate Edna Keasling who is retiring after more than 38 years in the newspapers. While she is new to the newspaper business Lara has been in retail sales and retail management for several years. -- Michael Mayo has joined the Houston Chronicle as vice president of production. Mayo most recently worked as project director for Detroit Newspapers. -- Joanie Morgan is the newest correspondent covering Round Top for the Fayette County Record. -- Sean Smith is the new publisher at The Pampa News. Smith, a native of Laredo, succeeds L.W. McCall, who is now publisher of the Borger News-Herald. Smith previously had been ad director for The Jackson (La.) Independent. -- The Sweetwater Reporter hired two new reporters. Grace Dudley joined to cover the city-county beat. She is a recent graduate of Texas Tech University where she earned an agricultural communications degree. Michael O’Callaghan is a new staff writer.
