Hazel Cunningham

Hazel Elizabeth May Cunningham, 97, died May 26, 2004, in Llano.

She married Thomas Harold Cunningham on Nov. 5, 1950 in Llano. Her husband, who died in 1989, was publisher of The Llano News, which the couple bought in March 1959. Hal Cunningham served as president of Texas Press Association from 1982-83 and was on the TPA board of directors several times, including six terms as secretary-treasurer.

Hazel was a school teacher for 42 years

Mary Alice Davis

Mary Alice Davis, 59, died May 25, 2004 from ovarian cancer first diagnosed in August 2002.

She received a journalism degree in 1965, from the University of Texas, where her work on The Daily Texan began a 38-year career as a professional writer and editor. In the 1960s and 1970s she worked for the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. During that time she married fellow journalist James Leslie (Jim) Davis.

She worked many years as a writer and editor for the House Research Organization of the Texas Legislature and spent the last five years of her journalism career as an editorial writer and opinion-page columnist at the Austin American-Statesman.

Harry Holt

Harry Holt, 89, died May 6, 2004. He spent nearly 70 years reporting on agriculture in West Texas primarily in broadcast journalism. He began his career with the Sweetwater Reporter and then moved to the Abilene Reporter-News. He hosted his own show “West Texas This Week.”

James Lindsey

James L. Jim Lindsey, 89, died April 27, 2004.

He held editorial positions at several Texas newspapers including the San Angelo Standard-Times, San Antonio Express and Midland Reporter-Telegram and was publisher and editor of the Hill Country News in Cedar Park.

Lindsey was director of information and publications in the Texas A&M University System from 1962-78, special assistant to the Texas Land Commissioner 1983-92 and executive assistant to State Comptroller John Sharp 1993-98.

Miriam Merritt

Miriam Merritt, 79, died April 30, 2004 in Houston.

She was a staff member at The Daily Texan at the University of Texas at Austin.

She started her career with the Corpus Christi Caller-Times and held many jobs in writing and journalism. For one year she held the Creative Writing Fellowship under Wallace Stegner at the Creative Writing Center at Stanford University.

Earl F. Moseley

Earl F. Moseley, 77, of Stafford County, Va. died May 2, 2004, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredricksburg, Va., after suffering a heart attack.

He was a reporter for The Canyon News and in the early 1960s worked for The Hereford Brand. He also worked for newspapers throughout Texas including the Amarillo Globe-News, Tulia Herald, Denver City Press and Brownwood Bulletin.

Christopher B. Webb

Christopher B. Webb, 32, died May 12, 2004, at his home in Cypress.

He was a reporter then news editor of The Springtown Epigraph for 18 months.

Webb is the son of TPA President Willis Webb, publisher of The Jasper Newsboy, and Julie Webb, contributing editor of The Jasper Newsboy.
