News BriefsMalakoff changes hands MALAKOFF — MediaOne, LLC, has purchased the Malakoff News from Loretta Humble, who had owned the weekly for more than 12 years. The purchase gives MediaOne three publications in Henderson County: The Malakoff News, The Monitor in Mabank and The Lake Area Leader. Humble will work with the News and MediaOne as a consultant and will continue writing a column. Michael V. Hannigan will continue as editor. Susan Harrison is general manager of MediaOne, which also owns The Kerens Tribune in Navarro County. Dallas group completes new public ownership NEW YORK, N.Y. — Courtside Acquisition Corp. completed its asset purchase agreement of American Community Newspapers LLC following shareholder approval June 28. The company will change its name to American Community Newspapers Inc. The company owns three daily and 83 weekly newspapers, including the Plano Star Courier and McKinney Courier Gazette in Texas. Lufkin publisher loves sound of press Gary Borders, publisher of the Lufkin Daily News, recently was featured on National Public Radio’s Soundclips. In the June 13 Soundclip, Borders describes how he feels as the News’ press revs up in the background. “It’s a sound I’ve loved for 38 years or so since starting out as a paperboy when I was 13 years old, ” Borders said. “I’m here to tell you that in small towns across America like Lufkin, Texas, newspapers are alive and well, we ’re flourishing we’re covering our communities and I really believe that we’ll be here for a long time and for many years to come I’ll be able to enjoy this sound.”
