Newsmakers

Danny Andrews, editor of the Plainview Daily Herald for the past 28 years, has resigned to become director of alumni development at Wayland Baptist University.  Andrews spent 39 years with the Herald.

Mark Atwood has joined the staff at the Copperas Cove Leader Press as news editor, filling the void left by the departure of managing editor Cedric Iglehart, who has taken that position with sister newspaper the Belton Journal. Atwood has more than 20 years of journalism experience and most recently was with the Burnet Bulletin.

Travis Burleson has joined the Sweetwater Reporter as a staff writer. Previously he was a substitute teacher in Abilene.

Angela Captain is the new editor of the Pearland Reporter News. She was a teacher in the Houston school district and has a degree in journalism from Texas Southern University.

Bob Clark returned to the Boerne Star, filling in for circulation manager Stephen Bartell.

Lauren Cook joined the Newton County News as editor. Before coming to the News, she worked as afternoon host for KAFR American Family Radio in Conroe. She also was a freelance writer.

Kitty Crider, an Austin American-Statesman writer, won the Les Dames d’Escoffier Internationals MFK Fisher award for excellence in culinary writing. The award, presented every two years, honors Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher, a widely lauded culinary writer. Crider won for her 2004 column “Anything for Mother; Remembering one February morning with Mom and a batch of angel biscuits.”

The Corsicana Daily Sun announced two staff changes.

Janet Jacobs returned as reporter. She worked for the Longview News-Journal and from 1999 to 2002 reported for the Austin American-Statesman.

Phillip Barnhard became the new sports editor. He is a May graduate from Texas Tech University.

Tracy Dang is the new managing editor of The Sealy News. She began working for sister newspaper the Colorado County Citizen as reporter about six months ago and before that also was with sister paper the Madisonville Meteor.

Mary Drennon has taken Dang’s position as managing editor at the Citizen. Drennon has worked for The Smithville Times, Wilson County News and San Antonio Express.

Adam L. Enriquez joined the staff of the Fort Stockton Pioneer as distribution driver. Enriquez owned and operated his own residential construction company for many years in Culberson County, where he served as justice of the peace from 1978-86.

Jerry Gaulding joined The Vindicator in Liberty as managing editor. He has been a journalist since 1976 and has spent a lot of time on small dailies in Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana.

Kaci Stanbery Harris joined the Athens Daily Review as a new reporter/photographer. Harris attended Trinity Valley Community College, graduating this past May with an associates degree in photojournalism.

The Katy Times made two staff changes recently.

Nick Georgandis, who had served as Times sports editor for nine years, has been promoted to managing editor. He replaces Mark Loyd, who left the newspaper after a three-year stint to pursue other interests.

Jenny Dial has been named sports editor. She has worked for the San Antonio Express-News, Sports Illustrated on Campus and the U.S. Olympic Committee.

Mike Kelly has been named assistant city editor of the San Angelo Standard-Times. Kelly previously was an assistant city editor at the Albuquerque (N.M.) Tribune.

Clyde C. King Jr., editor and publisher of the Fort Bend Herald since 1985, has been named president of Hartman Newspapers L.P., the Herald’s parent company that also owns and manages 13 Texas newspapers and printing companies.

He will be succeeded as editor and publisher by David T. Lyons, who has been editor and publisher of The Huntsville Item for the past 10 years. King will retain his title of president of the Herald, but will relocate offices to the adjacent Hartman Newspapers building.

Bill Hartman will become chairman and Fred Hartman vice chairman of Hartman Newspapers. Both Hartmans and King will continue their editorial efforts with the Herald.

Lee Hartman, advertising director, will take on additional responsibilities as general manager of the newspaper. He also is a vice president of Hartman Newspapers.

Jim Lehrer, a South Texas native, was inducted into the Society of Professional Journalists Washington Journalism Hall of Fame. Lehrer, a graduate of San Antonio’s Jefferson High School and Victoria College, worked as a newspaperman in Dallas for 10 years before he became host of a public television news program. He went to Washington, D.C., in 1972 to cover national news and politics.

Levelland and Hockley County News-Press and Lamb County Leader-News, both sister newspapers, announced several staff changes.

Jennifer Moore-Adkins, sports writer since August 2004, has been promoted to sports editor at the News-Press. Prior to joining the staff, she worked for the Idalou Beacon.

Joe Gonzales has assumed the position of Leader-News sports editor, replacing Jimmy Ivey, who took a sports writing position with the Weatherford Democrat. Gonzales transferred to the Littlefield newspaper from the Levelland newspaper where he was a sports writer.

Karla Lopez has assumed the position of Leader-News classified ads and circulation manager, replacing Andrea Gronewald.

David Lowe has been employed as a summer news intern by the El Campo Leader-News. Lowe has completed two years of study at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich., where he writes for the campus newspaper. Lowe is the son of Jim and Gail Lowe, current co-publishers of the Lampasas Dispatch-Record. His internship is sponsored by South Texas Press Association.

Mary Beth Pinnell began as the new education reporter at the Williamson County Sun. She is a recent graduate of Southwestern University, where she earned dual degrees in English and psychology with a minor in communication studies.

Collin Pope has been named managing editor of the Austin Business Journal. Most recently, Pope was the communications manager for Austin-based Strategic Partnerships Inc. Before that, he spent about six years as an award-winning reporter at the Journal.

Also at the Business Journal, A.J. Mistretta joined the newsroom as the commercial real estate, economic development, retail and energy beat - reporter. Most recently, he was associate editor of lifestyle magazine Modern Luxury Dallas.

Carla Pope Mayo retired from the Bowie County Citizen Tribune after 32 years in the newspaper business. She got her start in June 1974, straight out of high school and her marriage to Roger Pope. Her in-laws had purchased the DeKalb News in March 1974. In January 1979, her husband established the Citizen Tribune. In July 1984, the family bought the Bowie County News and Hooks Reporter and consolidated them under the Bowie County Citizen Tribune.

Brian Porter returned to the The Rowlett Lakeshore Times as managing editor. He also will manage the news operation of free sister paper the Mesquite News. He had been sports editor of sister papers Plano Star Courier and Allen American since February 2002.

Kevin Posival, sports editor of The Cameron Herald, Rosebud News and Thorndale Champion, left for a job at the Killeen Daily Herald. He had joined the staff in January.

Richard Martinez, a former sports reporter for the San Antonio Express-News and the Spanish-language La Prensa, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old boy last summer. Martinez received the sentence and a $1,200 fine in the 186th District Court after pleading no contest May 1 to sexual assault of a child. Martinez worked for the Express-News from 1987-97.

Kent Miller was promoted to managing editor of The Terrell Tribune. Miller, who has been with the Tribune since March 2002, previously was sports editor.

Kasey Ragle is the new sports editor at the Breckenridge American. Ragle replaces former American sports editor Rob Durham, who is the advertising manager at the newspaper. Ragle lettered in six sports at Graford High School and was named to several all-state teams.

Rebecca Robb joined the Del Rio News-Herald’s editorial staff. Robb is a 2006 graduate of the University of Oklahoma, earning a degree in English in May.

Charlotte Stewart is the new night city editor at the Longview News-Journal. Before joining the staff she was a grant writer and reporter at the Henderson Daily News.

Don Wallace joined the staff of the Bullard Banner News. Wallace came from the Cherokeean Herald where was a staff writer and advertising salesman. He began his career with the Jacksonville Daily Progress, advancing to sports editor for 14 years. He also worked at the Athens Daily Review and Frankston Citizen.

Scott Reese Willey was promoted to editor of the Beeville Bee-Picayune. Willey replaces Chip Latcham who has served in that capacity for more than 25 years. Willey came from the editor job at sister newspaper The Progress in Three Rivers.

Chip and his brother, Jeff, who manages the company, will continue as co-publishers of the Bee-Picayune, Progress and Refugio County Press. Willey’s move allows the editor to be devoted solely to content.

Eddie Davis has been named editor of the Progress to replace Willey. Davis has been in the newspaper business for 15 years working for various publications as a reporter, editor and sports writer.

Linda Wilson is the new editor of the Claude News. She was a teacher in the Panhandle, Amarillo and Claude school districts.

Kelly Young was hired as the new county reporter at the Jacksonville Daily Progress. Kelly spent the last two years in San Antonio working for Harcourt Brace, developing and scoring state aptitude tests and SATs.
