ObituariesBob BristerBob Brister, 77, died June 14, 2005, at his Houston home. He was an outdoors editor for the Houston Chronicle from 1954 until his retirement in 1993. He also worked at the Tyler Courier Telegraph and Marshall News Messenger and was a shooting editor for Field & Stream from 1971-85. Jeanine M. DavisJeanine M. Davis, 28, died June 23, 2005, after being diagnosed with liver cancer on April 21, 2005. She came to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in 1999 as a news copy editor and soon became a sports page designer. She later went to work for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Park FielderPark Burton Fielder, 84, died June 7, 2005. Fielder is the former publisher of The Wylie News and The Farmersville Times. He purchased the Times in 1953. He operated both newspapers for 12 years before buying the typesetting portion of the Newsfoto Yearbook Company from Taylor Publishing Company and moving to San Angelo. Louise FletcherLouise Goodman Fletcher, 73, died June 6, 2005. She was publisher of The Pampa News for 17 years and worked at the daily for 44 years before retiring in 1994. Ed HolderEd Holder, 72, died June 8, 2005, at his Port Arthur home. He was editor of The Bellville Times from 1956-59. He was an outdoors writer for the Port Arthur News from 1959 until 1971 when he joined The Beaumont Enterprise in the same post. In 1973 he became assistant publisher and vice president of the Enterprise publishing company. Dwight Hunter Jr.Dwight Lemoine Hunter Jr., 92, died May 26, 2005, of congestive heart failure. He was a journalist for the San Angelo Standard Times, Houston Chronicle and Beaumont Citizen Press. David PegoDavid Pego, 51, died June 13, 2005, at his home in Brookings, S.D. He was a former staffer at the Austin American-Statesman and former desk supervisor for The Associated Press in Dallas. A member of the Saginaw Chippewa tribe, he was the first Native American journalist to be named a McCormick Tribune Fellow and recently completed two years as a Knight Foundation visiting journalist in residence at South Dakota State University. Ed WendtEd Wendt, 55, died May 26, 2005, in Houston. He was news editor of the Houston Forward Times. Wendt was a fixture in covering Houston’s black community for the black newspaper for more than two decades even though he was white. Felton WestFelton West, 79, died June 23, 2005, after a brief struggle with lung cancer. West was a 53-year Houston Post journalist. He flew aboard Air Force One as the Post’s Washington bureau chief to cover President John F. Kennedy’s fateful visit to Dallas. He semi-retired from the Post’s Austin bureau in 1992. In 1993, the Headliners Foundation of Austin gave West a Lifetime Achievement Award. He fully retired in 1995 when the Post ceased publication. Charles WilsonCharles Wilson, 50, died July 1, 2005, in a five-car accident while moving from El Paso to Kerrville. The accident occurred at 2:45 p.m. just east of Van Horn, about one-quarter of the eight-hour trip to Kerrville. A new hire at the Kerrville Daily Times, Wilson was to start July 5 as the county reporter to replace Glenda Taylor, who left on June 20. On June 30, Wilson completed his last day as a reporter with the El Paso Times. Before starting with the El Paso Times in January 2003, Wilson served as the managing editor at the Weatherford Democrat.
