Celebrating the Past • Planning the Future History Center houses newspapersWithout records, there is no history and without newspapers a community’s history will be lost forever, University of Texas Center for American History director Dr. Don Carleton said June 18 at the 125th Summer Convention. Collections at the center on the UT-Austin campus range from Stephen F. Austin’s papers to the entire Exxon Mobil archive. But of interest to TPA members is the “History of the American News Media Collection,” which includes the Texas Newspaper Project, the largest collection of Texas newspapers in existence which in the 1990s catalogued 9,000 newspaper titles. Today the center houses 4,500 newspaper titles from Texas, the South, other parts of the United States and other countries. “The newspaper is the essential document for writing American history,” Carleton said.
