Nettie Saul Nettie Saul, 95, died May 17. She was the daughter of Bandera Bulletin founder J. Marvin Hunter and formed the early staff along with her father, son Ray Marvin Hay and Elizabeth James. She worked in the newspaper business most of her life, including serving nearly 36 years as editor of the Bandera Bulletin until 1981 when the family-owned Hunter Publishing sold. Her father established newspapers across the Hill Country, West Texas and New Mexico. Alden B. Summers Alden B. “Bucky” Summers, 62, died June 14 at a Houston hospital. He worked 20 years at the Houston Chronicle and helped reshape the sports department. He first started there in 1981 and worked on special projects and the Sunday and afternoon sections from 1986-92 when he assumed responsibility for the weekly outdoors section, which he oversaw until becoming ill in 1998. Before the Chronicle, Summers worked for newspapers in Maryland and Washington D.C. James McElhaney James “Jim” McElhaney, 69, died June 25. He was a former editor and part-time reporter for San Patricio Publishing Co. and worked in television and radio. He taught radio/television at Baylor University, University of Texas and Texas A&I University. Mary Putman Mary Putman, 89, died June 23 after a lengthy illness. She wrote the Highway News column for 52 years for the Texas Spur. The column had run continuously since 1948, as the Highway Community News and later Highway News, except during the last year when Putman became ill. Robert Moore Robert Edward “Bob” Moore, 82, died June 26 at a Dallas nursing facility. He worked for United Press International and The Houston Press before joining The Dallas Morning News in the 1950s. He retired in the 1970s as a copy editor. |
