Robin D. Best has
been named sports editor of the Jacksonville Daily Progress. He
replaced Don Wallace who joined the Frankston Citizen. Best
previously worked in the medical rehabilitation field.
The
Big Spring Herald hired a new sports editor and two summer interns.
Doug Law is the new sports editor. He came
from a three-year stint at The Humboldt (Nev.) Sun and
is a veteran journalist. He replaced Kamilah Ward. April
Ward and Lindy Barr joined the staff as summer interns. Both attend
local high schools.
Brent
Bowden is the new sports editor of the
Corsicana Daily Sun. He is a recent graduate from the University
of Georgia with a history degree and had been sports editor at the Athens
(Ga.) Observer since January. He was a sports writer at that
newspaper for two years before the promotion. Jayson
Larson, formerly of the Athens Daily Review and Marshall
News Messenger, is the Sun’s new sportswriter.
Angelina
M. Cavallo joined the Alvin Sun staff
as a summer contributing writer. She is a student at Alvin High School.
Pat
Craddock said good-bye after more than
four decades in the newsroom at The Navasota Examiner. He most
recently served as editor and had a 42-year career covering Grimes County
for the newspaper.
Kathryn
Culver left Van Zandt Newspapers to accept
the city reporter job at the Round Rock Leader. She replaced
Bill Frisbie. Culver was editor of four Van Zandt newspapers
and worked as a regional reporter for the Tyler Morning Telegraph.
Keith Davidson is
the new editor of the Stamford American. He moved to Stamford
a year ago.
Vanessa Fox joined
the Kaufman Herald as managing editor. She replaced Pam High
who left after eight years in the post to become executive director
of the local United Way. Fox is a recent graduate of Tarleton State
University.
Shari
Frazier joined the Allen American staff
as news editor. She came from the Rockwall Texas Success.
The
Gonzales Inquirer announced two staff changes.
Bob Thaxton joined the staff as editor. Thaxton
has more than 30 years experience with Texas newspapers. Debbie
Toliver returned as advertising manager. She worked for the newspaper
before but left to manage a Gonzales truck stop.
Dave
Grubb is the new publisher of the Rowlett
Lakeshore Times, which is part of DFW Community Newspapers where
he served as advertising director for the past eight months. Before
coming to the Dallas area, Grubb worked for the Indianapolis Star
News.
The Houston Chronicle is opening
a full-time South American bureau and adding a position to its bureau
in Mexico City. John Otis, who will
be based for now in Bogota, Colombia, has reported for the Chronicle
on a free-lance basis since 1998. He now becomes the Chronicle’s
South American bureau chief. Chronicle
business writer Jenalia Moreno will begin reporting from Mexico
City in August. Dudley Althaus, who
has reported for the Chronicle in Mexico and Latin America since
1990, will continue to serve as Mexico City bureau chief.
The
Katy Times won the Texas School Bell Award
from the Texas State Teachers Association. The Katy Education Association
nominated the newspaper for outstanding continuous coverage of education
issues.
Chuck
Kelly became the new sports editor for
the Lampasas Dispatch-Record. The 30-year broadcast news veteran
also will handle general news assignments. He replaced Terry Schaub,
who left for a similar position with the Killeen Daily Herald.
The Killeen Daily Herald promoted
city reporter Ginger Pope to regional editor and sports reporter
Juan Marshall to sports editor. Lee Trigg became the new
managing editor.
Jerry
Lackey returned to the San Angelo Standard-Times
to take over the newly created position of area advertising coordinator.
He has 30 years experience at newspapers and most recently was farm
director for KLST-TV. He last worked at the Standard-Times in
the 1960s and 1970s.
John
Lowman left the Aransas Pass Progress
to accept a position as sports editor at the Port Lavaca Wave.
Lowman had been editor for six years and worked with sister newspaper
the Ingleside Index. He started at the Progress in 1995
after a stint at the Lufkin Daily News.
Jose
Medina is the new reporter/intern at the
Zapata County News. He graduated in May from the University of
Texas with a journalism degree.
Jan
Morgan joined the TPA staff in Austin as
the new TexSCAN (Texas Statewide Classified Advertising Network) and
Texas 2x2 Network coordinator. She came to TPA from display advertising
sales at the Temple Daily Telegram. Morgan
replaced Ed Sterling, who became the publisher of the Alpine
Avalanche. Sterling was TPA director
of member services for more than nine years before leaving late last
year. He returned earlier this year on the advertising side before heading
to Alpine. Before coming to TPA Sterling worked for the Amarillo
Globe-News , The Canyon News and the Tulia Herald. He also
worked for the U.S. Coast Guard.
Kathleen
Noble is the newest staff writer for The
Princeton Herald and Farmersville Times. She came from the
Wylie News.
Brandi
Price joined the Van Alstyne Leader
as a news reporter. She came from the Farmersville Times and
Princeton Herald where she was a government reporter.
Margaret
Randazzo was named vice president and controller
of Knight Ridder, the parent company of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
She had been vice president and chief financial officer of the newspaper
since 1998.
Terri
Jo Ryan is the first managing editor of
the Stephenville Empire-Tribune. She replaced Shannon Duhon
who moved to the Miami (Okla.) News Record. Ryan most
recently worked as a reporter at Dallas Jewish Week and has 13
years experience at community newspapers.
The
Sealy News announced three staff changes.Publisher
Brandi Chionsini Guy accepted a position with parent company
Granite Publications. Kenneth Jones replaced
her as publisher and will serve as ad director. Terry
Carter is the new managing editor. He is a 14-year veteran journalist
and recently worked for an online sports site.
Doug
Sehres was named photo editor for the San
Antonio Express-News. He took over for Joe Cavaretta who
joined The Associated Press. Sehres also has worked at the Midland
Reporter-Telegram.
The Texas City Sun announced
two staff additions. Tom Gutting became
the new city editor. He is a May graduate of John Hopkins University
and was an intern at the Baltimore (Md.) Sun, Frederick (Md.)
News-Post and South Bend (Md.) Tribune. Jackie
McMahon is a summer intern. She will attend Texas Tech University.
Caris
Thetford is the new managing editor of
The Dublin Citizen. She attends Tarleton State University.
Steve
Van Cleve will be the new publisher at
the Fort Stockton Pioneer starting Aug. 8. Van Cleve came to
Texas via the East Valley Tribune in Mesa, Ariz., Pacific
Stars and Stripes in Tokyo and other papers.
Julie
Williams is the newest reporter to join
the Silsbee Bee. She worked for the Star Courier in Houston
and Houston Community Newspapers.
Charles
Wood left Granite Publications after 11
years to become editor of the Century News in Dripping Springs.
He came from the editor job at the Gonzales Inquirer and had
stints at the Marlin Democrat, Boerne Star and Bluebonnet
Banner in Brookshire.
