Newsmakers-- Gary Borders has been named publisher of the Longview News-Journal to replace retiring publisher Glenn McCutchen. Borders also assumed responsibility for the Marshall News Messenger. Tim Hobbs assumed Borders’ position as publisher of the Lufkin Daily News. Hobbs was publisher of Cox’s The Daily Advance and The Perquimans Weekly in North Carolina.
-- Lisa Bormaster has been named publisher of the Dallas Business Journal. For the past 10 years, she has served as publisher of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal and before that three years as publisher of the Austin Business Journal.
-- Sager Burgan, a carrier for the Hill Country News in Cedar Park, died in a car crash Dec. 4 while on his route at the intersection of U.S. Hwy 183 and the 183A toll road. Leander police told the News that a 35-year-old man who was driving the other vehicle struck Burgan’s car broad-side. Police said the other driver fled the scene and was charged with failing to stop and render aid. The News reported that its Web site saw more responses in its reader comments to the
story on Burgan’s death than any other story in 2007. The responses mostly came from his native
country Jordan and several other places he has family such as Syria, Saudi
Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
-- The Brownwood Bulletin announced a managerial reorganization including new titles and responsibilities. Robert Brincefield will continue to serve as vice president and publisher of Brownwood Newspapers Inc., but more of the day-to-day operations of the Bulletin will become the direct responsibility of Bill Crist, associate publisher, who will now hold the title of associate publisher/general manager. Gene Deason, managing editor, will become editor. Juliet Lemond, advertising manager, will become advertising and marketing manager. John Kliebenstein, circulation manager, will become circulation and operations manager. Mary Engle has been named pre-press and graphics manager.
-- Jeff Cohen, editor of the Houston Chronicle, will receive the Benjamin C. Bradlee Editor of the Year Award from the National Press Foundation at its 25th anniversary dinner in February.
-- Tony Eierdam joined the Lake Country Sun in Graford as a new staff member. He came from a short stint at the Plainview Daily Herald as sports editor. Eierdam served as sports editor of The Sun’s sister paper, The Graham Leader, from 1999-2005. He has also served as sports editor of the Henderson Daily News and Lampasas Dispatch Record.
-- Will Grimes joined The Elgin Courier as sports editor. He is a University of Texas graduate but left Texas to work
for the Douglas (Ga.) Neighbor before returning.
-- Dylan James Guy was born to Brandi and Darin Guy at 7:37 p.m. Dec. 14, 2007. He weighed 8 pounds 9 ounces and has blonde hair
and blue eyes. Brandi Guy is vice president of Granite Publications and general
manager of the Thorndale Champion. Darin Guy is a teacher.
-- The Katy Times announced a reorganization and expansion of its editorial staff. Mark Loyd returned to the staff in the newly created position of news editor. He has worked at the Vernon Daily Record, Kerrville Daily Times, Pflugerville Pflag and as Katy’s managing editor from 2002-06. Debbie Bradley joined the staff as a new reporter. The sports desk doubled in size to two people. Nick Georgandis returned as section editor and Scott Kaiser stayed on as sportswriter.
-- Greg Little is the new publisher at The Gonzales Inquirer. Little comes from Covington, Tenn., where he served as managing editor at The Leader, a twice-weekly newspaper, for the past four years.
-- Kristen McLaughlin joined The Pflugerville Pflag as news editor. She has worked for the River Cities Tribune in Marble Falls as a reporter and Taylor Daily Press as lifestyles editor.
-- John S. Merculief II has been named to the new position of P.M. editor for the San Angelo Standard-Times. Merculief had been city editor. Assistant city editor Mike Kelly will serve as interim city editor. Also in San Angelo editor emeritus Perry Flippin is leaving. Flippin’s career included working for the Sherman Democrat and Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. -- Rowe Ray was named interim publisher of the San Marcos Daily Record. He replaced Cathy Fagan. Ray also will continue as managing editor while the search for a publisher continues.
-- Star Community Newspapers announced several management promotions on Jan. 1. Dave Sorter has been named executive editor, overseeing all editorial operations in the company’s 15 newspapers. Sorter also continues as managing editor of the daily McKinney Courier Gazette. He has been with Star since June 2001. Nick Souders will move into the role of sales manager. Souders joined Star in May 2006 as business office manager. Samantha Livingston has been named accounting manager. Livingston joined the company in September 2006 as accounts payable specialist. Lisa Carr has added the role of automotive sales manager to her duties as Collin County auto representative. Carr joined American Community Newspapers, the parent company, in March 2004 in Minnesota. She moved to Star in July 2006. Lesley Rowland has taken the position of prepress manager. Rowland began as an intern with Star in the summer of 1999. She had been in sales since February 2005. Nancy Lewis has been named national corporate director of major account sales for ACN. Before that she was the major/national sales manager for the El Paso Times and the Texas New Mexico Partnership.
-- Jack Stein resigned as publisher of the Lindale News & Times. Tom Boone was named his replacement. Boone has served as an editor and manager at People Newspapers in Dallas.
-- The Uvalde Leader-News hired two new reporters — Heidi Hood and Jessica Chavez. Hood worked as an office manager and as an office assistant. Chavez worked at Oasis Outback in Uvalde and as a childcare teaching assistant in Austin.
