ObituariesWalt McAlexanderWalt McAlexander, 62, died Jan. 3, 2007, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was a sports writer for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal from 1964 until 1976. Rex Dearl BellRex Dearl Bell, 67, died Nov. 26, 2006, at a Corpus Christi hospital. He was a former owner of the Timpson & Tenaha News and established newspapers for those two towns. He was employed in the printing industry in Dallas for many years. W.L. DuBoseFuneral services for W.L. “Dub” DuBose, 76, were held Nov. 29, 2006, in Medina County. DuBose was the operator of the Kyle News’ first Linotype and in summer 1954 he joined with Moe Johnson and Pete Guttery Jr. in owning the newspaper while attending college in San Marcos. His family also owned the newspaper in Devine. Horace Lackey Jr.Horace Grady Lackey Jr., 79, died in Fort Worth on Oct. 29, 2006. He was publisher of The Texas Spur from 1948 until 1958. He purchased the newspaper from Mrs. O.B. McClure, wife of newspaper founder Oran McClure. In 1962, he and his family moved to Lubbock where he worked as an instructor at Texas Tech University. He retired in 1999. Tim LeslieTim Joel Leslie, 50, died Dec. 7, 2006, in Denton. He was diagnosed in August with pancreatic cancer. He was the owner, editor and publisher of The Town Charter in Aubrey, which he founded in 1999. He served as an Aubrey city councilman from 1983-85 and mayor from 1985-88 and was school board president for 11 years. Charles E. MapleFuneral services for Charles E. “Charlie” Maple, 74, were held Nov. 24, 2006, near Kosse. He served as fire and police reporter for the Amarillo Globe-Times and later associate editor and stockholder at the Brownfield News. F.D. SmithF.D. “Smitty” Smith, 86, died Nov. 7, 2006, at his daughter’s Cedar Park home after a lengthy illness. He was a sports reporter for the El Campo Leader-News. John SnyderJohn Graham Snyder, 53, of Austin, died Oct. 29, 2006. Graham was an entertainment writer for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He later worked as a freelance writer. Steve WaltersSteve Walters, 57, died Dec. 16, 2006, at a Temple hospital after losing a battle with cancer. He was managing editor of the Temple Daily Telegram where he started in 1976 as wire editor. He also covered county government for the Orange Leader.
