Clifford Acker Clifford Leon Acker, 61, died Dec. 12, 2001 at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont. He was a reporter for The Liberty Vindicator and other newspapers for many years. Beatrice Brown Beatrice Brown, 91, died Dec. 1, 2001 at a New Boston hospital. She was a columnist for the Bowie County Citizens Tribune for 17 years, covering the Burns/Red Bank communities. She began the column 35 years ago in the Hooks Reporter and continued when the Tribune was purchased in 1984. Karen Crum Karen Sue Crum, 66, died Nov. 27, 2001 at her Decatur home. She wrote the “Wise Bird Notes” column for the Wise County Messenger and was active in the local Audubon Society chapter. Mary Kennedy Mary Kennedy, 90, died Dec. 5, 2001. In her early career she was a reporter for the Austin Bureau of The Associated Press and assistant editor of the State Observer. She and husband Vann founded K-SIX Radio in Corpus Christi in 1947 and followed with TV stations there and in Laredo. Roy Slonaker Roy Douglas Slonaker, 65, died Dec. 2, 2001 in a Fort Worth hospital. He penned the column “Taste of Wise” for The Bridgeport Index and was a feature writer for the Index and Chico Texan. He also was involved in veteran affairs and the local library. Genevieve Tittle Genevieve Lee “Jym” Tittle, 82, died Dec. 6, 2001 at Regency House in San Angelo. She was a longtime reporter and photographer for the Brady Standard-Herald and was a Brady City Council member. She joined the newspaper in 1993 and retired to San Angelo in 1997 after a stroke. One night while covering a football game, she was run over on the sidelines by a quarterback, but she bounced right up with only a few bruises.
