Newsmakers

Michael Autry completed the transition as co-editor and co-publisher of the Coleman Chronicle & Democrat-Voice. He will partner with Brett Autry, who served as co-publisher for the past 21 years with Stan Brudney, who retired Dec. 31 after 32 and 1/2 years. Michael Autry is the grandson of the late Milton Autry and the great-grandson of Roy Autry Sr., founder of the Coleman County Chronicle in 1933.

Anna Boudreau is the new managing editor of the Hico News Review. She had been a writer, reporter and news editor at the Stephenville Empire-Tribune since 2001.

Jenny Bruce Clawson, a recent graduate of the journalism school at Texas A&M University, joined The Community News in Aledo as a full-time staff reporter. She worked summers as an intern at the News.

Randy Keck, publisher and owner of the News, assumed the role of editor. Keck originally served as editor from 1995 to 2003.

Jared Denniston joined the Alvin Sun as a new reporter. He previously was a reporter for The Citizen in Clear Lake and the Friendswood and Pearland Journals.

Betse Esparza, editor of the Alpine Avalanche, and her husband, Joe, welcomed a new baby boy, Joaquin, who was born on Jan. 20. The parents plan to call him Jake.

Patty Finney was promoted to news editor of the Elgin Courier. Finney has been with the Courier for six years, starting out covering commissioners court meetings part time.

Joyce Gray is the newest local columnist at the Lake Country Sun in Graford. She is an English and Spanish teacher at Strawn High School and will write “Southern Reflections.” Gray is a past member of the community columnists panel of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Alyson Henigan became the news editor of the Boerne Star. She previously worked as a reporter at the Stephenville Empire-Tribune and Hood County News.

Tommye Leemann was named general manager of The Olney Enterprise. Leemann worked at the Enterprise in 1975-76 as part of a vocational education program. She returned to the newspaper nearly two years ago.

Les Linebarger has been named general manager of the Henderson Daily News. For the past nine years, he has served as editor and publisher of The Kaufman Herald, a weekly newspaper that is a sister publication to the News.

The Cameron Herald, Thorndale Champion and Rosebud News welcomed two personnel additions in January — publisher Jeff Blackmon and staff writer Kevin Posival.

Blackmon spent the last nine months as news editor at the Andrews County News, and he has worked as associate publisher of The Llano News and sports editor for the Hood County News and Hereford Brand.

Posival is a 2005 graduate of the University of North Texas with degrees in journalism and creative writing.

Kurt Mogonye joined the Aransas Pass Progress and Ingleside Index as advertising director. Mogonye came from the Boerne Star & Recorder, where he worked in both editorial and advertising. He also has served in the production departments in Elgin and Stephenville.

Allison Pless took over as managing editor of the Oak Cliff Tribune following the retirement of Kathie Magers in the fall. Before coming to the Tribune, Allison worked in communications at the Southern Baptist Convention.

Clyde Peterson is leaving the Houston Chronicle after 40 years as editorial cartoonist and more than 12,000 drawings. He started with no experience after showing up at the newspaper without an appointment and unannounced. The Chronicle last month hired Pulitzer-winning cartoonist Nick Anderson.

Jeremy Powell is a new ad sales representative for The Diboll Free Press. Powell was attending college in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina struck and destroyed his apartment, belongings and even his college campus.

The San Antonio Express-News has named veteran newspaper executive Sergio H. Salinas as the new general manager and executive vice president.  Salinas joined the paper in 2003 and has been senior vice president of sales and marketing since 2004.

Susan Pape, most recently senior vice president of finance, was promoted to executive vice president of finance and administration.

Lilia Castillo Jones was promoted to senior vice president of advertising, a position held until now by Salinas. She was director of display advertising.

Randy Sanders, retiring editor of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, was elected president of the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas along with vice president Tim Kelly, editor of The Beaumont Enterprise; secretary Keith Shelton, retired University of North Texas professor; and treasurer Laura Prather, a partner with Jackson Walker.

Amber Trottier, who handles bookkeeping and classifieds at the Fort Stockton Pioneer, is engaged to Nathan Reeves, who operates the local Fast Lube. The couple is planning a July 1 wedding in Fort Stockton.

Two Texans made the Newspaper Association of America Presstime’s “20 Under 40” list published in December — Bill May, vice president of production at The Dallas Morning News, and Ann R. Poe, retention services manager at the Austin American-Statesman.

Charles Willgren joined the Blanco County News as a police and courts reporter.
