Julius Mathan Carter

Julius Mathan Carter, 47, died Oct. 24, 2001. He was the son of the late Julius P. Carter, founder of the Houston Forward Times, and Lenora Carter.

Taylor Lee Gillespie

Taylor Lee Gillespie, 56, died Nov. 8, 2001 in Amarillo.

He worked 27 years at the Amarillo Globe-News before transferring to the Times-Union in Jacksonville, Fla. eight years ago to become advertising scheduling manager.

Gillespie started as advertising runner at the Globe-News and became national advertising manager in 1991.

Henry Goodman

Henry Thomas Woodrow “Woody” Goodman, 89, died Nov. 18, 2001 at East Texas Medical Center in Athens of complications from heart attacks.

He worked in The Dallas Morning News mailroom for 25 years until World War II. After the war he worked for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and The Wall Street Journal where he retired at 82.

Danny Hill

Danny Brian Hill, 52, died Nov. 8, 2001 of flu-like symptoms at his Dallas home.

He joined The Dallas Morning News in 1983 and was the senior dispatch clerk for advertising services.

Max Rizley Jr.

Max Rizley Jr., 42, died Nov. 27, 2001 at a Houston hospital after losing a lifelong battle with a kidney disease.

His column had appeared in the Texas City Sun weekly since 1989. He was a longtime reporter and desk editor for the Galveston County Daily News. He also was editor a local magazine and penned a book on Galveston folklore.

Don Scarbrough

Don Scarbrough, 88, died Dec. 8, 2001 of pneumonic asthma.

He bought the Williamson County Sun in Georgetown in 1948 and ran it for 40 years until selling to his daughter and son-in-law, current publisher Clark Thurmond, in 1986.

He also founded newspapers in Thrall, Taylor and Thorndale.

“He was a country weekly editor, and that’s something that hardly exists anymore, but that was his approach,” Thurmond said.

Archie Waters

Archie Waters, 83, died Nov. 5 after suffering a stroke at his El Paso home. He was a columnist for the El Paso Times from 1980-88 and a reporter in New York.

Margaret Webb

Margaret “Bridget” Davis Webb, 88, died Nov. 11, 2001. She wrote a weekly nature column for The Wimberley View from 1976-84. She also worked for governmental agencies in the Austin area.
