Winston F. Gardner

Winston F. Gardner, 90, died July 14, 2006, in his home.

He was editor of the Kilgore News Herald for 45 years before his retirement in 1983. While at the University of Texas at Austin he worked for The Daily Texan and graduated with a degree in journalism in 1937.

Gardner began his newspaper career as editor of the semiweekly Kilgore Herald and continued as editor after the paper was combined with the Daily News to form the News Herald in 1940. His wife June Heffington, was society editor.

Gardner retired fully in 1983 but continued to write the Kilgoround column weekly for more than 20 years.

Virginia Hargrove

Virginia Hargrove, a columnist at the Ingleside Index, died last month.

She began a monthly column in The Index called The Pelican Express in September 1993.

John A. Rector

John A. Rector Jr., 86, died July 13, 2006, of pneumonia.

Rector worked at The Dallas Morning News for 40 years and was the first person to hold the title of publisher who was not a relative of newspaper co-founder George Bannerman Dealey.

Rector also served as director of the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association and the International Newspaper Advertising Executives.

He was elected to the Belo Corp. board of directors in 1983 and held the post until his retirement in 1986.
