Paul R. Busch

Paul R. Busch, 94, died of congestive heart failure July 8, 2005 in Stillwater, Okla.

He was professor emeritus of communication at Trinity University where he worked from 1956-80, first-time author at age 90 and former newsman. He was a board member of South Texas Press Association and was assistant to the president. The STPA scholarship was named in his honor and is now in his memory.

Busch arrived at Trinity in 1956 as chairman of the journalism department. Four years later, he became assistant to the dean of the university.

Garland Cullum

Garland Mac Chapman Cullum, 87, died July 10, 2005.

She became a Dallas pioneering female journalist after her 1938 graduation from Southern Methodist University. She wrote a column for The Dallas Morning News and Dallas Times Herald.

Her daughter, Lee Cullum, also has written columns for the Morning News.

James E. Crowther

James E. Crowther, 75, died July 4, 2005.

He was a former executive who supervised news and editorial operations at The Houston Post, joining in 1967. He was promoted to executive vice president nine years later. He also practiced law.

Robert J. Mathes

Robert J. Mathes, 76, died July 14, 2005, of complications from diabetes and other causes after a lengthy illness at Lakeview Hospital, Mandeville, La.

He joined the Army Signal Corps after graduation and became 1st lieutenant, training combat photographers for the Korean War. He was in community newspapers and became a publisher by age 33.

Dorothea McGrath

Dorothea Louise Lyle McGrath, 85,

died July 6, 2005, of congestive heart failure in Redmond, Wash. She was described as a trailblazer for women in Texas newsrooms

McGrath worked for The Associated Press in Dallas, the Wichita Falls Record-News and as a reporter and editor for The Dallas Morning News during her long career.

Arnold Rosenfeld

Arnold Rosenfeld, 71, died July 1, 2005, of complications from cancer.

He was a former editor in chief of Cox Newspapers and editor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. In Texas he was editor of the Austin American-Statesman from 1984-88.

Milton Pete Schiller

Milton Pete Schiller, 73, died in early July. He began writing the weather  report for The Sealy News in the 1960s and in 1995 began a humor column, which he wrote for the last 10 years.

Mollie Warren

Mollie Warren, 54, died July 3 in Ruidoso, N.M. She was a copy editor for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.
