ObituariesLouis Anderson Louis Anderson, 90, died July 4, 2003 at his Corpus Christi home. He was sports editor of the Corpus Christi Caller-Times from 1948-77. He was noted for bringing in-depth, Sunday and Monday coverage of the National Football League to the Caller. Allen Burton Allen Wells Burton, 88, died July 12, 2003 three days before his 89th birthday. He was a writer and editor for the Longview Daily News where he started in 1938 and retired in 1969. Before that he was a reporter for the Shreveport (La.) Times. He also was a cattle rancher. Jewell Cayce Jewell Garrett Cayce, 93, died July 2, 2003. He was publisher of Fourth Estate Publishers, which published newspapers and magazines, and was editor and publisher of the Van Alstyne Leader when he won a first place for personal columns in 1969 from the North and East Texas Press Association. He also worked 43 years for Mobil. Lawrence F. Coker Lawrence F. “Larry” Coker, 73, died July 17, 2003 at his home in Lufkin. He was owner and publisher of the Sabine County Reporter in the 1970s. He also served on the faculty of Angelina College since 1979. Sheila A. Curtis Sheila A. Curtis, 57, died July 12, 2003 at Plano Medical Center following a three-month struggle with cancer. She had been employed with Star Community Newspapers, formerly known as DFW Community Newspapers, for nearly 18 years and was general manager of the Allen American from 1999-2002. In 1987 she was named salesperson of the year for the newspaper. Tony A. Garcia Tony A. Garcia, 53, died July 10, 2003 after suffering a massive heart attack. He was the pressroom assistant supervisor at the San Antonio Express-News where he had worked for 33 years. In 1995 he won the supervisor of the year award and more recently the productivity award. Martha Gardner Martha Virginia Silas Gardner, 77, died July 28, 2003 after a heart attack that led to a car accident not far from her Garland home. She joined The Dallas Morning News in 1960 as a teletype operator and was promoted to assistant foreman in 1979. She was instrumental in converting production from mechanical to electrical through computerization. She retired in 1992. Lynn Holland Lynn Bailey Holland, 51, died July 11, 2003 at her home in Sherman. She was a reporter for The Galveston County Daily News and practiced law for 15 years after graduating from Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1985. James Montgomery James “Jim” David Montgomery, 73, died June 26, 2003 at his Lake Whitney home. He was a sports writer for 35 years including one year at the Houston Chronicle and 11 years at the Waco Tribune Herald. He also was the sports editor of the Colorado Free Press, assistant sports editor, sports editor and outdoors editor of the Cincinnati Enquirer, retiring in 1992. He worked part time for the Austin American-Statesman and Fort Worth Star-Telegram after retirement and covered some high school sports for The Clifton Record and Lone Star Iconoclast in Crawford. David Reese David Alex Reese, 45, died July 19, 2003 at his Dallas home after a heart attack. He was a 27-year pressman for The Dallas Morning News where he started working while still in high school. He left in May 2002 due to an illness. Jo Bess Starnes Jo Bess Starnes, 73, died July 16, 2003 in Las Vegas, N.M. at her cabin. She retired as classified manager of the Odessa American in 1985 and began her newspaper career at the Midland Reporter-Telegram in 1949 and worked for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. |
