NewsmakersMike Armstrong is the new advertising director at The Baytown Sun. Armstrong worked in the home-building industry in Houston for 11 years, but had six years newspaper experience in Columbus and Clear Lake and two years in sports public relations at Sam Houston State University.
He replaced Janie Halter, who moved over to circulation/nie manager. --
The Bandera Bulletin announced a staff change.
Managing editor Philip Billnitzer left to pursue other interests. Associate editor-in-chief James Taylor and
lifestyles editor Jessica Hawley will take over his duties.

Chron.com, the Houston Chronicle’s Web site, announced two staff changes.
Stephen Weis has been named vice president and general manager. He joined the Chronicle in August 2004 and has extensive Internet operations and sales experience, including positions at Freedom Communications, Advance Internet/Publications
and the Seattle Times Co.
Scott Clark becomes vice president and editor and will be responsible for all Internet content, including a redesign that will launch in early summer. Under his leadership, Chron.com has been nominated for many online journalism awards.

The Dallas Morning News announced two promotions.
Dwayne Bray has been named
deputy managing editor for metro news. Bray most recently had been sports editor. He joined the Morning News in 2000.
Garry Leavell has been named sports editor. He has been with the newspaper since 1994 and has held a variety of positions. Leavell previously worked at the Killeen Daily Herald and the Odessa American.

Tracy Dang, a recent University of Texas graduate, joined the Madisonville Meteor as reporter.

Mark Engebretson was promoted to editor of The Graham Leader,
effective April 4. He had been managing editor of the Lake Country Sun in Graford, sister newspaper. Engebretson is the 2005 winner of the third annual First Amendment Scholarship, sponsored by TPA. Engebretson had been with the Sun since 2000.

Keenan Gingles, part-owner and publisher of the Ennis Daily News for two years, has been named publisher of The Daily Star in Hammond, La.
Gingles is a past president of Louisiana Press Association and was publisher of the Abbeville (La.) Meridional before moving to Ennis.
Lange Svehlak was named general manager of the News, following the announcement by Gingles. Svehlak will serve as interim publisher until the new publisher is named. Svehlak joined the staff in August 1998 as an advertising sales representative. He was promoted to ad manager in 2001.

George Gutierrez, vice president of advertising at the Austin American-Statesman, has been named publisher of ahora si!, the Spanish-language weekly published in association with the American-Statesman. Gutierrez will assume his new role after a replacement has been hired. Gutierrez has been at the paper since 1990.

Jim Lowe, editor of the Lampasas Dispatch Record, was promoted general manager of Hill Country Publishing, the parent corporation of the Dispatch Record, Xerox Sales and The Print Shop.
Sports writer Bobby Simons was promoted to sports editor. He joined the staff last July and previously served as sports editor of the Hereford
Brand.

Bill Morgan has been appointed publisher of the Greenville Herald-Banner. Morgan most recently was publisher of the Athens Daily Review. He also has been publisher of the Jacksonville Daily Progress and the Sweetwater Reporter and editor of the Durant (Okla.) Democrat during his more than 20 year in newspapers.

The Navasota Examiner announced two staff changes.
Dave Lewis became managing editor. He came from the McKinney Courier-Gazette. Lewis and his wife Cue once published the Celina Record.
Carrie Little, former bookkeeper at the Madisonville Meteor, joined the staff as bookkeeper. She came from Brenham.

The Port Arthur News recently added two reporters and changed another’s duties.
Mary Meaux became community page editor.
Guiseppe Barranco joined as a staff writer covering the police beat. Barranco will also be the Groves reporter. He is a recent graduate of Lamar University.
Ashley Sanders will report on events in the Nederland and Port Neches as well as Port Neches-Groves and Nederland schools. Sanders is a 2004 graduate of Texas A&M University with a bachelor of arts in English.

--The Sealy News welcomed two new staffers — writer Lindsey Vaculin and distribution manager Holly Ramirez. Vaculin came from the Madisonville Meteor where she was a writer and page designer since 2003. Ramirez is a former well technician.

David Sullens is the new publisher of the Athens Daily Review. Sullens most recently was publisher of The
Kosciusko (Miss.) Star-Herald. He began his career at the Van Alstyne Leader and has worked at The Paris News, The Galveston County Daily News, Herald-Zeitung in New Braunfels and The Navasota Examine

Larry Thornton has joined the Muleshoe Journal as managing editor. Thornton has served as managing editor of several Oklahoma newspapers and in Montana.

The Tyler Morning Telegraph named Nelson Clyde IV associate publisher, Art McClelland vice president-sales and marketing, and Lauren Ballard advertising director.
