ObituariesJim Baker Jim Baker, 64, died March 8, 2004 of complications from prostate cancer. His journalism career included working for The Associated Press, The Beaumont Enterprise, the Dallas Times Herald and the Austin American-Statesman. Baker most recently had been night city editor at the Enterprise.
Harvey Bogen Harvey Bogen, 89, died March 27, 2004. He was a reporter and editor in Dallas, first as a WFAA broadcaster, then at The Dallas Morning News. In April 1955, Bogen joined the News as a reporter. He retired in December 1979 as an assistant city editor. From 1953 to 1955, he was news director for WFAA-TV (Channel 8).
Craig Cullinan, Jr. Craig Frances Cullinan, Jr., 78, died March 17, 2004. As president of Review Publications, Inc. from 1951-1955, Craig served as editor in chief of the Freeport newspaper.
John Curylo John Curylo, 54, died March 14, 2004 of brain cancer. He was assistant managing editor of the Temple Daily Telegram and had been on staff since 1992. He previously worked for The Orange Leader and the Port Arthur News.
Sybil Jones Sybil Claire Banister Jones, 82, died March 3, 2004, in Silver, City, N.M. She and husband Lyman Morgan Jones III founded The (Marble Falls) Highlander, in 1959. She worked in radio and wrote for newspapers, including the Austin American-Statesman, and was an editor and proofreader for Austin’s Futura Press.
Benjamin Peeler Benjamin Harrison Peeler Jr., 77, died March 5, 2004. He was a sports writer and had a six-year stint at the Odessa American from 1950-56. He left the sports desk to become editor of the Fort Stockton Pioneer from 1956-61, and then served a brief stint as the first editor of a Billy Sol Estes newspaper venture in Pecos.
Robbie Villalobos Robbie Farley Myrick Villalobos, 50, a veteran El Paso journalist, died Feb. 18, 2004 of cancer-related complications at Providence Memorial Hospital. Since 1981, Myrick worked for the El Paso Times, the El Paso Herald Post, Diario de Juarez and, most recently, El Paso Inc. in a wide range of capacities, from writer and copy editor to editor of features, opinion and business sections. |
