Digital Communications Associate

 

The Laura and John Arnold Foundation (LJAF) is a private foundation whose core objective is to improve the lives of individuals by strengthening our social, governmental, and economic systems.

 

Position:    Digital Communications Associate

Location:    Houston, Texas

Core Responsibilities:

  • Manage LJAF’s Web presence, including its main website and sites for key initiatives
  • Work with subject matter experts to create and edit compelling digital content
  • Populate LJAF sites with fresh content on a regular basis
  • Identify and produce videos and graphics that explain LJAF’s work in various issue areas
  • Manage LJAF’s existing social media accounts and explore opportunities to engage on additional platforms
  • Actively monitor coverage of LJAF and its issue areas
  • Identify and share content aligned with LJAF’s interests
  • Develop email campaigns and digital newsletters
  • Track Web and social media analytics and prepare reports
  • Manage relationships with external Web developers and designers

Essential Skills, Experience, and Qualities:

  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in successfully managing digital communications in order to advance an organization’s mission and objectives
  • Track record of developing and executing digital and social media strategies
  • Ability to work with subject matter experts to produce engaging content, including stories, videos, and graphics
  • Proven experience expanding an organization’s presence on social media
  • Understanding of digital best practices
  • Ability to incorporate social media into broader communications campaigns
  • Knowledgeable about current events and public policy
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to evaluate complex information and provide sound communications recommendations
  • Experience writing Web content preferred

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three to five years of experience as a Digital Communications Associate
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications, political science, public policy, or a related field

Position: Communications Intern

Location: Houston, Texas

Term: Paid internship – 40 hours per week during summer 2018

 

The Communications Department develops and executes strategies that will advance LJAF’s efforts to promote evidence-based solutions to persistent problems. The department oversees media relations, public information campaigns, digital properties, content production, and internal communications. The person hired for this role will report to the Communications Manager.  

 

Core Responsibilities

  • Assist with market research and development of the Foundation’s Annual Report  
  • Partner with digital and media relations specialists to write and curate digital content, including weekly newsletters and social media posts
  • Help identify and address internal communications needs  
  • Assist with fact-checking for public materials
  • Assist with planning and logistics for events hosted by the Foundation
  • Maintain media directories

 

Essential Skills, Experience, and Qualities

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Detail-oriented, with strong research and analytical skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of Associated Press style and copy-editing
  • Academic interest in journalism, public relations, marketing, or a related field
  • Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program

The Hill Country News, an award-winning media company in northwest suburban Austin, has an immediate opening for a news reporter.

Our market includes the fast-growing cities of Cedar Park and Leander along with portions of Austin, Round Rock, Jonestown and Lago Vista. We are home to the Leander Independent School District, consistently rated among the best in the state. The shores of Lake Travis are just 20 minutes away. Downtown Austin is just 30 miles and accessible by MetroRail. We're close enough for all the conveniences offered by a city that's consistently rated among the best places to live in the U.S., but we're also far enough away to avoid most of the traffic snarls frequently associated with Austin.

We publish include a weekly print newspaper and related website as well as a variety of magazine products from bridal to sports and lifestyles publications.

This position will be expected to cover a wide range of news and feature stories ranging from local government, schools and community events. Should have a strong interest in community reporting a passion for telling engaging stories.

Candidates must have journalism education or training. Some some newspaper experience (college newspaper or internships are acceptable) is strongly preferred. Must be comfortable conducting in-person and phone interviews, be well-versed in AP style, and have basic photography and photo editing skills. Must also be social media savvy, as this position will be expected to attract a broad audience and drive engagement with our work through creative and consistent use of social media.

Must be able to meet deadlines and turn quality stories around quickly. Must have reliable transportation and a valid drivers license and auto insurance. The qualified candidate will be an organized, motivated self-starter looking to make a difference in a growing community. This position also offers an opportunity for advancement both in-house and within our group.

Our group of newspapers shares a creative design team housed in our Cedar Park office. Our newsroom staff is not responsible for page layout, but candidates should have a keen eye for producing visually appealing stories with a modern balance of copy and visual elements. Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as computer skills including sharing/collaborating via Google Apps products is a requirement.
