The Killeen Daily Herald is seeking a journalist who is a fast and thorough page designer and copy editor to join and manage our design/copy desk.The ideal candidate will be a team player, can multitask, learns quickly, works well under pressure and can work independently. He or she should have InDesign and Photoshop experience, as well. The applicant for this full-time job must have strong management, organizational and editing skills, a solid knowledge of the AP Stylebook and the ability to write reader-grabbing headlines, as well as design pages. This isn’t a design-house position. The designers/copy editors work in the newsroom, copy edit stories, pull wire stories, adjust for breaking news and coordinate with editors directly to produce high-quality community journalism. Our 3.5-person desk, which doesn't include sports, is responsible for producing three weekly papers and seven daily paper each week and an occasional special section. The desk manager’s responsibilities include providing desk staff schedules a month in advance for all tasks to be done, such as the Sunday sections and weekly papers. As is requested of all managers, the desk manager should also be a good role model for the newsroom and help with newsroom goals.
Killeen Daily Herald staff members are required to live in or move Killeen, Copperas Cove or Harker Heights, which are the main towns the Herald covers.
Killeen is east of Interstate 35 in central Texas, about an hour north of Austin.
