Fenice Community Media is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Publisher at The Fort Stockton Pioneer, an award-winning media company located in the West Texas community of Fort Stockton.
The Pioneer is the oldest business in Fort Stockton and has been the sole newspaper for Pecos County, continuously publishing since 1908. Fort Stockton is a small town steeped in West Texas tradition and poised for significant future growth due to the planned Trans-Pecos Pipeline project.
Located 240 miles east of El Paso and 310 miles west of San Antonio, Fort Stockton is just 80 miles south of Odessa and lies at the major departure point from I-10 for those headed to the beautiful Big Bend National Park.
We are seeking a proven community newspaper leader who can manage day-to-day operations including all facets of the newspaper while successfully leading the advertising sales effort. This is a selling publisher role and the incumbent will be expected to manage an account list and lead revenue generation efforts in addition to holding profit & loss responsibility for the Pioneer and its subsidiary publications.
The successful applicant will work with employees of various degrees of experience, leading a successful team to produce high-quality publications that meet our company’s profitability goals. The publisher oversees, and is directly involved as needed, all areas of the newspaper — managing the editorial product from planning to production, managing advertising sales, planning special sections, bookkeeping, distribution, analyzing monthly financials and planning for the future.
Though newspaper layout is performed at our regional design hub in the Austin area, candidates must have knowledge of AP style and an eye for modern, visual-oriented design, as well as experience managing digital product development — including advertising and reader content — and be fluent with social media and have experience driving engagement online.
We offer a competitive starting salary, performance-based bonus opportunities, and benefits including health insurance and generous paid time off benefits. The Pioneer is part of Fenice Community Media, a progressive group of Texas community newspapers that prefers to promote from within. If you meet the above qualifications and are ready for the challenge, please include your resume, cover letter outlining your relevant experience, and salary requirements when applying.
