Jerry "Wags" Waggoner died Dec. 31, 2015, at the age of 79

Waggoner worked in journalism for more than 50 years. He was on staff at the Killeen Daily Herald until 1990 and continued writing freelance articles until nearly the end of his life. He previously worked for the Amarillo Globe News, Colorado Springs Gazette-Telegram, Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, the 12th Man Foundation and a newspaper in Oregon. During 15 years at The Eagle, between 1971 and 1986, Waggoner served as both executive sports editor and managing editor.

Waggoner was drafted into the Army in 1954, and served in Hawaii for almost four years. While there, he wrote for a Hawaiian newspaper, as well as for the Pacific Army Command newspaper. He attended the University of Texas and Tarleton State University.
