Community Service

DAILY DIVISION

1. Longview News-Journal. Subject: Head Start. Theme fits well with “Year of the Child” program. Colors, photos, graphic comparisons good for readers. This was a major topic of concern and newspaper leadership resulted in an enormous benefit for the community and for the children.

2. Mineral Wells Index. Subject: Rails to Trails. Strong leadership by The Index is clearly evident. This project will benefit the area for decades. Thorough presentations.

3. Pasadena Citizen. Subject: Police Response. Strong editorial position was positive for the community. Good coverage. Page 2 spread was hard reading. Art work would break up copy and increase interest. Nice local cartoon. Thanks for including letters to the editor. Shows community feelings. Good success story.

4.Midland Reporter-Telegram. Subject Shades of Difference. Good logo developed for series. Suggest that logo be used in all related stories and photo cutlines. Nice treatment of mugs and quotes. Many posed photos: firing-squad style instead of news action. Opportunity to tell story with photos was missed.

WEEKLY/SEMIWEEKLY DIVISION

1. Commerce Journal. Subject Creek Pollution. Reporters on this story showed great determination, from challenging the closed meeting to following the dump truck of contaminated rubble. Good work! The type of community service a newspaper should strive to produce.

2. Miami Chief. Subject: Closing School. Good effort to inform readers about potential closing of school. Liked editorials.

3. Canyon News. Subject: Race Track Bond Issue. Good reporting on potential impact of racetrack. Covered all issues.

4. Bastrop Advertiser. Subject School Bond Election. Good effort to provide information on the most important subject in any community: education.
