Community Service

DAILY DIVISION

1st-DENTON RECORD-CHRONICLE. - Hopefully, your efforts paid off. I would think the best community service would be something to help make the community better. If yours didn’t, it’s not your fault. Is a campaign planned this year to show the progress made? It should be and the executives from the plant that went elsewhere should be invited back for an update.

2nd-ODESSA AMERICAN. Drugs -not a new topic to cover but you went with a different approach. Good! Good! Good!

3rd-ATHENS DAILY REVIEW. When in need of help, community organizations turn to newspapers. You responded for the good of the community and that’s what this category is all about.

4th-SEGUIN GAZETTE-ENTERPRISE. Perhaps more in the line with investigative stories, but this one also does its share of educating the community.

WEEKLY DIVISION

1st-WOODVILLE WOODSMAN. Good news coverage of a natural disaster and the immediate problem it caused. Paper through news columns made people aware of need, which served to help them. Then it identified deeper problems, saw long-range solutions, and worked to enact them.

2nd-BEEVILLE BEE-PICAYUNE. The Bee-Picayune’s effort to help its community land a major building project and a big job provider are impressive. The campaign was focused, aggressive and ultimately, successful. Good work.

3rd-WILLIAMSON COUNTY SUN, GEORGETOWN. Newspaper identified a need and got active in bringing about a solution. A good mix of news and editorial coverage. Shows how a paper can lead a community. That’s good journalism.

4th-ROUND ROCK LEADER. Worthy project. I’m sure it touched many lives. Homefront page nicely done.

Special Section / Edition

DIVISION A-Daily

1st-GALVESTON DAILY NEWS. We are impressed with the sheer volume of the Horizons ‘89 effort (88 tons of newsprint used, a story on page one says). We hope recycled newsprint was used. Seriously, great package. Head-and-shoulders above any other entry. Excellent photography, writing and story selection. This package is a keeper.

2nd-DENTON RECORD-CHRONICLE. Good package, good subject, excellent photography and graphic design. Readers and advertisers both served well with this effort.

3rd-CLEAR LAKE DAILY CITIZEN. Timely exploration of worthy subject. Outstanding job.

4th-WAXAHACHIE DAILY LIGHT. Good work.

DIVISION B—Semi-Weekly

1st-CANYON NEWS. Winner by sheer weight. Must have taken better part of

2nd-GEORGETOWN SUNDAY SUN. Interesting, informative, unusual look at community. Good ideas. Carried through well with photography. Took a lot of work.

3rd-ALVIN SUN. This one is unusual. It’s got to rank for unmitigated gall if nothing else. Here in Kentucky we’d be embarrassed to make that much money off one person.

4th-BRADY STANDARD. An interesting section on an historic event and something which is obviously important to the town.

DIVISION C-Weekly

1st-FREDERICKSBURG STANDARD/RADIO POST. Good balance of editorial and advertising content Gives visitors an appropriate overview of what there is to know about Fredericksburg.

2nd-HEARNE DEMOCRAT. Centennial editions are always a good bet. This one goes a step further with articles by those involved in the community years ago. Certainly more interesting than just a recap of history of the community that some newspapers do. Well done!

3rd-DUNCANVILLE SUBURBAN. Ties in theme throughout, “A New Direction,” to promote Best-Southwest. Good editorial content.

4th-DeSOTO NEWS ADVERTISER. One of the best sports special sections I’ve seen. Has much more detail, especially in photos. Photographers helped make this on& stand above the rest. They didn’t rely on just team photos.

DIVISION D-Weekly

lst-BRACKETT NEWS, BRACKETTVILLE. We, the citizens, blast our governments but it’s our fault for not the voting booth. This one wasn’t the largest or most beneficial in ad dollars, but it was still the best. We need more of this. Kudos & Bravo!

2nd-LAKE TRAVIS VIEW, AUSTIN. Quite an undertaking and I’m impressed. What quality! Several “Visitor Guides” were entered but yours was by far the best.

3rd-SAN MARCOS NEWS. I’m certain this one was accepted well by the community. You did a good job and, again, it’s a topic we don’t develop into special sections too often.

4th-FRISCO ENTERPRISE. Impressive! Good quality editorial content with generous mix of advertising. Gives you an appreciation of those who provide a
