Daily or metropolitan weekly

1. Galveston County Daily News, subject: lead paint problems. Good use of people to tell story. This is my kind of story. Good work!

2. Midland Reporter-Telegram, subject: alcohol abuse among youth. Good effort. Almost too much for one sitting. Packaging was somewhat confusing. This appears to be a serious problem and you gave it a great deal of attention. Why run this on Saturday? At my paper, it is least-read. Why not follow this up a year later. What has happened?

3. Pasadena Citizen, subject: R/UDAT. Good effort. Could have used more people-problem leads to show readers the scope. I liked the first editorial and was not surprised to find city changed mayors.

4. Rockwall Chronicle, subject: county courthouse. Effort would have been improved with feature stories on employees and visitors coping with problems. You mentioned some instances briefly in columns but missed opportunity to spotlight problem and bring readers into courthouse.

Weekly or semiweekly

1. Beeville Bee-Picayune, subject Beeville naval station closing, in-depth coverage of major transition in your community. This is not a winner based on bulk, but hard work.

2. Deer Park Progress, subject: educational foundation. Impressive effort.

3. Fort Worth Times-Record, subject school bond issue. Good job of informing voters. You could have taken your readers into classroom with buckets to catch leaks during ram, or restrooms that need to be nailed shut.

4. Canadian Record, subject: talking trash. Good coverage along the way, but more stories dedicated strictly to controversy would have improved coverage. Controversy often buried in council stories.

Special Section or Edition

Division A Daily

1. Waxahachie Daily Light, subject profile 1993. Thorough treatment of local community. One of most extensive progress editions I’ve seen.

2. Pasadena Citizen, subject changes 1993. Great-looking layouts. Good coverage of community. Gutsy look at “burdens” especially effective.

3. Midland Reporter-Telegram, subject: oil report! Permorama. Oil report is excellent treatment of single industry as lead-in to progress edition, which is in itself excellent. Great color in ads and editorial.

4. Stephenville Empire-Tribune. subject horizons 1993. Excellent variety in stories and layout presentation

Division B Semiweekly

1. Williamson County Sun, Georgetown, subject 1993-94 guidebook to Georgetown. Magnificent cover. Great photo. Great layout. Wonderful layout and graphics throughout section. Photography excellent throughout. Quality of printing good. Writing informative and to point. while still warm and friendly. This kind of quality is usually only found in a large metropolitan daily. Congratulations.

2. Arlington News, subject Arlington stadium commemorative. I like design and graphics. Looks like big-city paper. Good use of color. Stories well-written. Feature on local team doctor a nice addition to historical profiles on baseball. Drawback: very few ads related to subject matter. Good photographs.

3. Commerce Journal, subject: progress edition. Color photos and color reproduction knocked my socks off. Excellent layout and graphics. Especially charming are photos/comments by children. Nice feature graphics.

4. Brazorian News, Lake Jackson, subject: Lake Jackson 50th anniversary. Stories made good reading, especially articles on Lake Jackson Gators and Airliner Hijack. Thorough chronicling of city history. Old black and white photos added to story of Lake Jackson.

Division C weeklies more than 2,000

1. Fredericksburg Standard Radio Post, subject: visitor guide. Creative ads. Distinctive in style, copy, artwork. As enjoyable reading as editorial. Ads have all necessary features. Makes me want to visit there. Super job to ad and editorial staff. Should have been promoted on front page of papa.

2. Jewish Herald-Voice, Houston, subject: Bar Mitzvah Party planner. Ads and editorial are refreshing.

Ads highly personalized. In a world of computer-generated ads it’s good to see some with personal touch. Good reading for all faiths. Very original.

3. Fort Worth Times-Record, subject police chief anniversary. Good ad and editorial idea. Spring is one lucky man.

4. The Informer, Houston, subject: 100th anniversary. Ads strong, clean, professional with unique slants.

Division D weeklies less than 2,000

1. Canadian Record, subject: Christmas Eve edition. Good photo quality, clean ads. Santa letters could have been limited and photocopied in children’s handwriting. Run as they are, they are monotonous.

2. Dublin Citizen, subject St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Good photo quality. Good mix of articles/graphics. Childrens’ essay reproductions are nice feature.

3. Bosque County News, Meridian, subject: newcomer and visitor guide. Beautiful cover! Old photo and historical articles are great.

4. Brackett News, Brackettville, subject: hunting guide. Excellent photography. Sharp. Emphasis on hometown people. Cover photo of two young hunters was really great. Good advertising content on subject.
