Community Service
Dailies
1. Galveston County Daily News. Galveston County Housing Authority: A great example of commitment to coverage of a local issue. Stories were informative and succinct. Nice variety and good mix of stories, editorials, boxes, etc., however, typos and other proofreading mistakes are a problem. And, I would like to have seen more from the pro-C HA folks. Surely Walter Norris and other CHA officials aren’t the only ones who think GHA is doing something right.
2. Conroe Courier. Flood of the Century: Informative, service oriented articles. Victims’ fund provided icing on the cake.
3. Midland Reporter-Telegram. Inclusion of People With Disabilities: Nice use of real people to make package more readable and compelling. Especially liked Myra Lee Saucedo’s first person account.
4. Brazosport Facts, Clute. Teen Pregnancy: Good stories about parents in special section. Stories about services, statistics, etc., tended to bog down. More focus on parents or tighter editing would have helped.
Weeklies/Semiweeklies
1. Garrison in the News. Downtown Revitalization: This entry exemplifies how a newspaper can be a driving force in community pride and a linchpin which joins segments in a singular purpose. The combination of historical and current profiles provided a solid basis from which to catapult the square revitalization plan.
2. Canadian Record. Juvenile Boot Camp: The overall project was well explained in a concise cover letter. Coverage was extensive. The Record did an outstanding job of addressing all sides of the boot camp issue from start to finish, resulting in a juvenile facility for the county. Of course, only time will prove if the result is truly a service to future generations.
3. Beeville Bee-Picayune. U.S. 181 Deathtrap: The newspaper played a key role in compelling the state to act on improvements, a considerable service.
4. Miami Chief. Water District: This protracted editorial campaign made readers aware of the long term threat to the community’s water supply by a corporate concern. Not a traditional community service, but a good example of how a diligent press serves its present and future community. Excellent.
Burkburnett Informer-Star. Freedom Essay Contest: Entry was not extensive enough to compete.
Special Section of Edition
Division A, Dailies
1. Seguin Gazette-Enterprise. Perspective 94: Did you miss any advertisers? Great revenue producer. In second section, could you have come up with a four color section front? I thought it was a health-care section. Excellent map! Great, strong photos, but watch those strange areas of white space that appear near the back of the section. ‘There’s some new docs in town” — watch grammar! You have taken a typical section and made it very reader friendly and a wonderful revenue producer.
2. Brazosport Facts, Clute. Good Neighbors: Good local journalism. Great photos. Work on headlines and the look of jumps. Great news content. Kroger made a wonderful good neighbor sponsor. Alternate boldness of headlines for a cleaner look. Keep up the great work.
3. Rosenberg Herald-Coaster. Profiles: Section generates high readership. Great job on local coverage. How many people contacted you wanting to be in next time? Photo reproduction can stand improvement, especially full color. “A Day in the Life” a great section. Open inside pages a bit more with more white space between columns to ease readability. Nice section.
4. Stephenville Empire-Tribune. Horizons 94: Unique presentations on section fronts. Muddy photos in ads and editorial section hurt the overall look. Clean it up and you’ll win this category. Great news coverage.
Division B, Semiweeklies and Twin Weeklies
1. Williamson County Sun, Georgetown. Guidebook to Georgetown: Well done sections. At first I thought I had three separate entries. Too bad it wasn’t one or no more than two sections. Design and type choice on ads flows well with news layout of pages. Additional color on second and third sections would help. A nice, clean entry.
2. Hood County News, Granbury. Silver Shores: Outstanding color cover. I like the advertisers index, list of clubs, organizations, etc.
3. Graham Leader. Medical Update: I like the cover with action photos. Montage ad of Graham General Hospital full of interesting local photos. Medical directory helpful. Excellent editorial support.
4. Clear Lake Citizen. Lunar Landing: Outstanding color photo on cover. I like the local photos and memories of the first lunar landing. Section well done.
Division C, Weeklies, circulation 2,251 or more
1. Duncanville Today. Visions 94: Excellent color, content ad presentation for this first Visions section. Nice lead in on page one to sections inside. Variety of coverage and strong advertising content make this a winner against strong competition.
2. Marlin Democrat. Progress 94: Strong index and page 1 leads to well done sections. More color would have been nice. Good overview of community and what it has to offer. (There were many near-miss entries in this category.)
3. Park Cities People, Dallas. Cattle Barons’ Ball: Classy section with lots of great color and art work. A different, unique approach catches eye of readers and judges alike. Fine job.
4. Lancaster Today. Killer Storm Strikes: Quick action by news staff and ad sales staff alike resulted in an informative special section. Great photos and details with ads tied directly to storm’s fury. This one had to be well read.
Division D, Weeklies circulation 2,250 or less
1. Albany News. Fandangle: It’s obvious a lot of effort and talent went into this edition. It’s user-friendly with inviting layouts, good photos and ads that draw the reader in. Cuts under pictures in photo collages would have been better, but overall, this edition is a winner!
2. Friendswood Journal. Horizons 94: Attractive package that readers must have enjoyed.
3. Copperas Cove Leader-Press. Newcomer Guide: You’ve packed a lot of info into this edition. Its editorial content pushed it ahead of other entries. Next goal: some new ideas in layout. Perhaps a new headline font or at least a little more time spent on headlines.
4. Hamlin Herald. Back to Rath’s Trail: Map and directions to Rath City. Good idea! Wanted poster ad of contributors was clever way to handle what could otherwise be quite dull!
