Dailies

1. Galveston County Daily News. Galveston Housing Authority: I know the expense and stress for the Daily News has been great to bring the GHA misuse of funds story into the open, but there are rewards, knowing you have done your job well.

2. Baytown Sun. Literacy: As you said, “When someone can’t read, we all sink.” And unfortunately, the water is getting deeper. It sounds like a very worthwhile project for everyone. Don’t let it die.

3. Kerrville Daily Times. Teens in Trouble: The Kerrville Daily Times is to be commended for not only bringing the teen problem to light, but also helping with solutions.

4. Paris News. Political Debates:  Debates bring more information to the public about politics. Keep up the good work.

Weeklies and Semiweeklies

1. Aransas Pass Progress Help Add Sparkle to Aransas Pass: An excellent project. Well documented. I especially like the ASAP this week columns and news stories to supplement the editorial comments. Good use of photos. Very good documentation.

2. Dumas, Moore County News-Press. Christmas Sharing: Good pro- gram and good use of the newspaper to directly answer a need. I especially liked the stories about individuals and families being helped.

3. Buda, Free Press. Too Many in Graveyards:  Good series. I hope there is more follow-up planned. More interview stories on gangs, other troubles in school mentioned in your letter seem logical extensions of the series.

4. Beeville Bee-Picayune. Medical Center: Good use of the newpaper to serve citizens of the community.

Special Sections

DIVISION A Dailies

1. Galveston County Daily News. Horizons, Citizen of the Year: Clearly best. Great layout and design. Very consistent. Lots of information. Good job.

2. Odessa American. Industry, Past, Present, Future: Excellent focus. A lot of work went into this. I liked the layout and photo use. Packed with information.

3. Seguin Gazette-Enterprise. Community: Very consistent. Good use of theme. Great ads. Super job!

4. Vernon Daily Record. Salute to Victory Field: Good photos. Lots of ads. Very timely. A keepsake for anyone involved.

DIVISION B

Semiweeklies

1. Granbury, Hood County News. Newcomer and visitor guide: Like the role models approach. Good content surrounded by strong (I’m jealous) advertising. Nice cover. Best presentation and consistency in the group.

2. Mabank Monitor. Looking Back: Congratulations on selling this section. It’s a different way to look at the past year. Layout was effective.

3. Livingston, Polk County Enterprise. Sesquicentennial: Great section. Cover gives and interesting view of some of the important faces from your past. Inside design was a bit weak. Bank ad with photos on page 2 was terrific.

4. Bastrop Advertiser. The Bastropian: Contains lots of good information. Solid presentation.

DIVISION C Weeklies circulation 2,001 or more

1. Pittsburg Gazette. Pilgrim’s pride anniversary: Nice-looking section. But the front cover looks like an ad. Great content and use of old photos. Nice job.

2. Dallas, Park Cities People. Cattle Barons’ Ball: Great section. Good white space on cover. Lots of photos. Good ads but real estate ads are way too cluttered. Great art head on cover.

3. Lytle, Medina Valley Times. Hunting Guide: Great-looking section packed with information. Even non-hunting fans should appreciate this. Nice job.

4. Rowlett, Lakeshore Times. Flying High: Nice section. Conveys the excitement of the community.

DIVISION D Weeklies circulation 2,000 or less

1. White Oak Independent. Annual Boredom Issue: Nice theme, good content.

2. Muenster Enterprise. Birthing Center: Type needs leading.

3. Midlothian Today. Football 96: Not too bad. Nice ads.

4. Devil’s River News, Sonora. Hunting Guide: Good ads.
