General Excellence
1. Duncanville Today. Something to appeal to everyone, including youth not involved in sports. An attractive paper with wealth of news and features. Full color photos enhance appearance, but variety of stories carries Today to 1st place. Opinion page columns are nice, but paper needs to include editorials. Keep personal columns on one page.
2. Navasota Examiner. Attractive page I. Inside box is clean and informative. Good use of editorial page. Here again, something for every reader. Crisp writing on page 1. Feature page is super use of space. The larger type is questionable, but O.K. Photographer and press crew should be acknowledged for job well done.
3. River Cities Tribune, Marble Falls. You’re not afraid to be bold with design and it shows in a good way. Writing is crisp and clean; photos look good, but apparent trouble with full color. School, ag and business pages nice. Good editorial page.
4. DeSoto Today. Overall good job. Good variety on page 1, variety inside. Auto and people sections attractive and well written. Unusually good layout. Include editorials on opinion page. Personal columns a definite plus to paper.
Advertising
1. Park Cities People, Dallas. Sales Force ad backs up the message. Great idea. Calls should be pouring in for the Realtor. Very well done. Good layout. Ellen Terry and Cattle Barons: Good use of color. Very attractive ad. Theme of ad is very well presented. Matthew Trent: Great, great photo. Very creative. Good, clean ad.
2. Colleyville News & Times. Pappagallo: Good, clean ad layout. Good use of color. Feragne Association: I love this art. Nice, clean layout. Doncaster Fashion: Again, nice clean ad that gets your attention.
3. River Cities Tribune. No Payments for 90 Days: Easy to read. Content good. Designated Driver: Great use of color and very effective message. I’m a believer. Landscaping: Tells the reader that adver tiser is into a specific kind of nursery work — natural. Very eye appealing.
4. Westlake Picayune, Austin. Call Me First: Good use of color photos. Gets point across. Nice. layout. One Day Sale: Good black and white ad. Very sophisticated ad. Good technique. Get Story Straight: Background too dark.
Column Writing
1. Rockdale Reporter, Susie Freeman. Super Dad: Oh, yes! Both columns well written. A good length and topical. Woman’s Right: Thanks for saying it.
2. Kerrville Mountain Sun. Robert Trapp, Holiday Air Travel; Dennis lams, Cigar Smoking: No comments.
3. Park Cities People, Ray Wilkerson. Tether to Daughter: Easy to read. Looking Back: Even long, this column held my interest. Nice tribute, excellent lead.
4. DeSoto Today, Chuck Bloom. Iron Claw: Real picture in words. Unusual topic with some moral lessons. Guilty Parties: Good writing. Good look at both sides.
Editorials
1. Medina Valley Times, Lytle. News for Sale: Good for you! In-your-face is what papers need to do to city councils. It’s His Job: Great writing —gutsy — you’re a winner!
2. Kerrville Mountain Sun, Robert Trapp. Youth Ranch: Tough topic. Need to demand, not ask, for action. Good writing and research. Tar and Feathers: Hardhitting. Good local issue. Somehow, though, just can’t get the point of this.
3. Fredericksburg Standard—Radio Post. Looking for Tolerance: Doesn’t really solve problem of racism, but who could? At least you write short, sweet, to-the-point. Good job. Thanks, Teach: Nice. Something unusual. Clever. Great job.
4. Mineola Monitor. Gandhi and King: Great editorial. Interesting report of problem at school district. Original Closing: Interesting history lesson, but this is more of a column than an editorial.
Feature Story
1. Navasota Examiner. Pat Craddock, Troopers Train: Terrific topic and presentation. Writing needs editing. Those sentences are so long and fact-laden that I had to read them at least twice and then I wasn’t sure what I had read. Short sentences would work well here — action! Nice photos. Nancy Ashburn, Storybook Wedding: Nice work! I don’t like the front in body copy, but the story’s very nice. Fewer photos would allow you to get entire story on one page. Jumps are deadly. Good work.
2. Duncanville Today. Robin Gooch, Bird Surgery: Very nice story. Well written, good lead, nice photos and all on one page — great! Not too long, either — good work! Kristi Tucker, Elizabeth Gaby: Real nice story. Lead is way down in story, but yours is O.K. Work to get entire story on front to eliminate jump. One photo (bottom) would have been enough.
3. Colleyville News & Times, Amy Norris. Clown Remembered: Nice little story. Good photo. How much does a “Skelton” go for? Lead good, but somewhat awkward and off color. Good presentation. In-Tune Teacher: Nice piece. Good photo! How about a couple of cute quotes from the kids?
4. Rockdale Reporter. Mike Brown, Oldest Photo: Interesting piece and probably well read. Nice photo. Lead could be much better. Where did Cameron Street come from? When did it arrive? Good length. You didn’t make a mountain out of a mole hill. Antiques Revive: “Buying stuff right off the trailer” a great lead. You should have used it. Lead is decent, though. Good quotes in story. Nice length. Not too long.
News Writing
1. Pittsburg Gazette. Nice details in stories. Well written. Nice variety of paragraph size.
2. River Cities Tribune. Well-written stories of genuine local interest.
3. AzIe News. Good writing. Why did daughter kill father? Boat story could have been edited tighter.
4. Duncanville Today. To-the-point writing. Nice.
Page Design
1. Park Cities People. Nice paper — very reader-friendly. Type is easy to read. Refer boxes sell the inside, where attention to design detail is not forgotten. By far the most innovative of the group.
2. DeSoto Today. Photos draw reader in. Everything is clean and crisp. Headlines are well-balanced. Overall very nice look.
3. Duncanville Today. Good, clean layout. Photos certainly help this paper. Very strong. Some in side pages get awfully busy.
4. Navasota Examiner. Nice, readable layout. Nice attention to detail with good photos.
Photography
1. DeSoto Today. David Goodspeed, Eyes on the Ball: Great photo that shows the concentration of the young player. Photo has all the elements. Goodspeed, Pig Chasers: Good photo of not-so-everyday occurrence. Kenneth Brock, Lineman Consoled: Good, clean photo with good emotion, although I would have cropped tight on the second young man.
2. Duncanville Today. David Goodspeed/Steve Hamm, High Angle Rescue: Good, clear photo from a difficult angle.
3. Jasper NewsBoy. Singing Sisters: What I like about all three photos is the use of faces. No need to document the event —just show a “slice.” Crawfish Toddler: Good, clean photo. Your subject was obviously enjoying himself and you share that. Overheated Pitcher: Again, a sports photo of a part of the game fans don’t always see. I liked your imagination.
4. Madisonville Meteor, Gus Morgan. Boy Eating Apple: Good, clean photo. Viewer is drawn to your subject’s eyes. Firefighters: Full-page photo works very well in this case. Unusual angle draws reader in. Wading Fisherman: Nice shot, done, well.
Sports Coverage
1. Park Cities People. Photos, headlines, color and design drew me to this paper. There’s a good variety of photos. I realize that football is most important, though. Solid headlines lead the reader in. Only negative is coverage. Football coverage is great and football special section is, too. It’s unfortunate the other sports don’t receive a fraction of that recognition. Overall, well put together. I really enjoyed reading your paper!
2. Navasota Examiner. Stories are very interesting. Leads creative. Coverage of wide variety of sports is solid. Photos are well done. Too bad football pictures are not as solid as others. Solid headlines draw readers in. Identity boxes help readers find story they want. Very organized and interesting info. I really enjoyed reading this!
3. Rockdale Reporter. Writing solid, interesting stories, good description. Try to cover more than just football, but I realize this is what people like. Overall good action and emotional photos. Some are poorer quality. Good design. Excellent use of photos, headlines and graphics. Stats and calendars really spice it up. Good variety in headlines.
4. Fredericksburg Standard—Radio Post. Solid, interesting, writing. Creative coverage. Covered variety of events, games, sports. Good variety of photos. Some are out of focus/grainy, but great without Photoshop. Solid designs. Good use of photos, graphics and copy. I like the jump headlines. They create good white space. Headlines overall well done, but some could have been better. Help the reader with the story. You don’t always have to use a hammer at top of page. I love the subheads! Nice job!
Division 6 Weeklies 2,001 to 3,000
General Excellence
1. Monahans News. Color on Page 1 is impressive. Too bad in Sept. 18 issue that registration is off and pressmen got red ink on page. Oct. 9 issue was clean. Page 1 screen too dark. Try 5-10 percent screens. Attractive newspaper with good variety of coverage.
2. Lake Travis View, Austin. Front page color photos excellent. A lot of varied news. Well organized and good in every department. Writing is good, but could be a little smoother.
3. Lancaster Today. Good writing, graphics. A lot of content depends on common sections with other newspapers in same group, Cedar Hill Today, etc. Typo in “Methodist hospitals” headline, page 8. People Today, can’t see the fisherman in the fishing photo. Page 1 of Feb. 27 issue.
4. Brazorian News, Lake Jackson. Striking typo page 1, Dec. 7, on lead article: “theather” instead of theater. Overall a good community newspaper.
Advertising
1. Lancaster Today. TXI Football: Very good job. Nice layout and design. Great color job. Town Square: Eye-appealing layout and design. Great for small space advertising. Fairbanks: Great ad and layout idea. Good use of color. Shows creativity.

4. Coppell Citizens’ Advocate. Sidewalk Sale: Border idea on inside pages — centerspread — great idea. Screens are too dark in some places, not dark enough in others. Country Fair: Great idea. Ad layout is nice. Color is great, just the right amount of information. Sidewalk sale: Screens not dark enough in some places and too dark in others. Overall layout is good.
Column Writing
1. Lancaster Today. Chuck Bloom. Hatred: Interesting slant on a touchy issue. Very readable and tight writing. Jewish Boys: Good job of writing about a common dilemma parents face all the time.

4. Clay County Leader, Henrietta. Phil Major, Phil’s Philosophy: Good idea but the story’ didn’t really hit home. Phil’s Philosophy: Great idea and format. It’s an important subject in rural towns.
Editorials
1. Castroville News Bulletin. City Hall Secrecy: Right on! Picking on Schools: Amen.
2. Tulia Sentinel. Three Men’s Murders: My only suggestion is to watch length. Too many words may lose some readers, although I can’t pick at anything you say. Diana Tabloids: Same comment.
3. Copperas Cove Leader-Press. Tax Rate: Which proposal to back? You fall to state the key point here, or if you want a “yes” but don’t care which, you didn’t plainly state that. Much good writing here, but not good enough. Adult Oriented Business Ordinance: Good job.
4. Brazorian News. Missouri Prisoners: How do your final two paragraphs fit with your headline? Your writing style rambles a bit. Martin’s Suggestion: Plenty of meat here. Almost too much to really give this piece punch. Rewrite the quotes to get the point across more concisely. Not a bad job here, just could’ve been better.
Feature Story
1. Lancaster Today. Chuck Bloom, Against Odds: Great story. You handled a sensitive story with class. Ultimate Playground: Interesting perspective on something lots of people face.
2. Copperas Cove Leader-Press. David Landmann, Proudest Day: Great story. Lead and presentation were good. Connie Landmann, Shop in Cove First: Good subject and lead.
3. Crowley Star Review. Nancy Huckaby, God Made Three: Solid lead and good detail. Picture is also a good fit, but it could be bigger. Married Bliss: Unique story with interesting slant.
4. Cedar Hill Today. Tom Beesley, Fire Truck: Not a real compelling story. Almost would fit into a news category. Fast Lane: Great presentation and use of photos. A good example of a feature story that appeals to everyone.
News Writing
1. Lancaster Today. Both stories are very nicely done. Writing is very good with attention to facts. Print is clean and headlines are nice and large. Well done.
2. Copperas Cove Leader-Press. It isn’t always necessary to use “that.” He added that he will check with an attorney. It can be eliminated in this case. Very. clear, concise writing.
3. Clay County Leader. Use of photos is great. Shots are close and clear, so they really help illustrate your “Storm thrashes” and “Storm derails” stories. Both show careful gathering of facts.
4. Coppell Citizens’ Advocate. Watch your typos. It isn’t always necessary to use “that.” Speakers out percent. Watch the use of “which” when “that” should be used. Both are well written and show attention to facts.
Page Design
1. Brazorian News. Overall nice package. Feature stories were a plus with the overall readability high. Opinion was well organized but sports needed some help.
2. Aransas Pass Progress. Nice modular presentation with big photos on front. Sports needs more modularity and smaller logos. Five mugs were nice. Opinion well-organized and readable. Lifestyle page a little cluttered.
3. Monahans News. Could have used more color on front. Lots of chances not taken. Opinion was a bit cluttered and gray. Nice .use of color on sports but no real dominant art-there. Lifestyle page could use cleaning up.
4. Copperas Cove Leader-Press. Spot color was nice but overall design could be more modular. Nice local editorial cartoon. The page is a little gray, otherwise. Sports and Lifestyle solid and informative.

Division 8 Weeklies 1,200 or less
General Excellence
1. Cass County Sun, Linden. This is a nice, clean paper. You have a beautiful flag, but I wouldn’t junk it up with extra artwork. You might consider running obits one column wide. Two columns are really bad for eye to follow.
2. Eldorado Success. Nice photo work. Put cutoff rules below photos that are unrelated. Flag is a little busy.
3. Keene Star Reporter. Most of this paper I really like. Try using 1-point instead of 2-point boxes. It will lighten your paper up. Photo work is good. You seem to use more than one headline face inside. Try using only one, except for really special kickers on page 1.
4. Presidio International Paper. O.K. papers. Don’t use heavy borders on pictures. Also use more horizontal layout throughout paper. Mix up headline sizes more.
Advertising
1. Clarendon Enterprise. Recapture History: Excellent layout with picture. Explore Your World: Excellent graphics. Denim Days: Again, excellent graphics and creativity.

Editorials
1. Normangee Star. Council’s Action: Pretty good assessment of situation, it seems. Absence of Police: Get out the cattle prod, if your editorial didn’t do the trick.
2. Ingleside Index. Drunken Driving: It is difficult to put a fresh face on an old issue, but you took advantage of Diana’s death to do just that. Teach Children Well: Good job. Concise writing drives home the point without being preachy.
3. Clarendon Enterprise. Amend Constitution: Though made in jest, your two suggested constitutional amendments could be a substitute for the lack of common sense we see today. Think Before Selling: Logical ideas about a major local question. Nice job.
4. Miami Chief. Drunken Drivers: Pretty good effort. Public Notices: Too long. More like a documentary in print.
Feature Story
1. Joshua Star Tribune. Amanda Rogers, Young Athlete Fights Cancer: Excellent story. The ending was perfect. Julie Olson, Being Santa: Unlike your Santa, this story is not a perfect “10” but it is good.

2. Ingleside Index. Solid, modular layout on front. Well organized. Photoplay was good. A few too many typefaces though. Opinion was well organized. Sports and Lifestyles also solid.
3. Joshua Star Tribune. Clean, modular layout on front. Needs to have dominant, main photo, however. Opinion cramped and lacking content. Sports was nice, but could have trimmed all the pictures. Lifestyle page was informative.

1. White Oak Independent. Great job of comprehensive coverage in the football preview. Very exhaustive and impressive. Use of columns is also good. Very consistent in format and photos were also good.
2. Ingleside Index. Good use of stat box for football game. Photo production is poor in some cases. Layout is good and easy to read.
3. Garrison in the News. Good coverage of opening of new stadium, with plenty of photos. Would like to see more variety of coverage.
4. Eldorado Success. Strong use of photos. It is a bit confusing to hop pages for sports from 3 to 5. Cutlines and headlines on sports stories are good.
