The Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues is accepting nominations for the 2010 Tom
Gish-Award and Pat Gish Award, recognizing exemplary rural journalists.

Tom and Pat Gish, who published The Mountain Eagle in Whitesburg, Ky., for more than 51 years, were the first recipients of the award in 2005. Tom died in 2008; Pat remains publisher, and their son is editor.

The Gishes withstood advertiser boycotts, declining population, personal attacks and even the burning of their newspaper office to provide the kind of journalism often lacking in rural areas. They exemplify the courage, tenacity and integrity that is often necessary to render public service in journalism, especially in rural communities.

The Ezzell family, owners of The Canadian Record, won the Gish award in 2007. The award was accepted by Laurie Ezzell Brown and her mother, Nancy Ezzell, widow of Ben Ezzell, who established the paper’s reputation for courage, especially in covering national political controversies.

The Institute is seeking nominations that measure up to the records of previous winners. Nominators should send detailed letters to Director Al Cross at the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues, explaining how their nominees show the kind of courage, tenacity and integrity that the Gishes demonstrated in their pursuit of rural journalism.

Documentation does not have to accompany the nomination, but is helpful in choosing finalists, and additional documentation may be requested or required.

Letters should be postmarked by Sept. 1 and mailed to: Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues, 122 Grehan Journalism Building, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY 40506-0042. For more information, contact Cross at 859-257-3744 or
