Panhandle Press Association hosted its 100th convention April 15-17 in Canadian. There were 109 registered attendees and 28 newspapers were represented.
Mary Smithee, Canadian Record, was elected president. Phil Hamilton, Olton Enterprise, was elected vice president. Ashlee Estlack, Clarendon Enterprise, was elected secretary/treasurer. Laurie Ezzell Brown, Canadian Record, became immediate past president. Directors elected include: Roger Estlack, Clarendon Enterprise; Grover Ford, Hereford Brand; Amanda Rogers, The Canyon News; Jeff Blackmon, Blackburn Media Group/Childress Index, and Jed Moorhouse, Briscoe County News, Silverton.
Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill White addressed the convention. Two nationally recognized journalists spoke: television journalist Judy Muller - who was presented with a Peabody Award on May 17 in New York, N.Y., for an investigative series on medical marijuana dispensaries in California - and Amarillo native Ben Sargent, a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist who retired from the Austin American-Statesman last year. Longtime Borger News-Herald photographer Don Rice also spoke.
Sargent, an Amarillo native, and Rice, both were inducted into the Panhandle Press Association Hall of Fame. Sargent, who at age 12 worked as a proof runner for the Amarillo Globe-News, graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 1970 and worked as a reporter for Long News Service for five years. He joined the Austin American-Statesman in 1974. Rice has been a photographer and photojournalist for the Borger News-Herald for the past 47 years.
The association's annual better newspaper contest was judged by the Texas Gulf Coast Press Association. Results:
