Texas Press members will gather Jan. 21-23 at the Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa and Convention Center in Galveston for the 2010 Midwinter Conference and Trade Show.

A highlight of the meeting will be the Texas Newspaper Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Friday evening, Jan. 22. Sarah L. Greene, publisher emerita of The Gilmer Mirror, and the late Rigby Owen Sr., George Bannerman Dealey and Lyndell N. Williams, will be added to the pantheon of giants of the Texas newspaper industry. Randy Keck, publisher of The Community News, Aledo, will speak on the topic, “What I’ve Learned from Magic.”

Another highlight for attendees will be the annual trade show, featuring 60 booths manned by vendors offering a wide array of products, services and information beneficial to Texas newspapers. See the vendors on p. 8!

Many people will be attracted to the Texas Newspaper Foundation Silent Auction, an affair that takes place in the trade show hall. Members and trade show exhibitors donate items that all present may bid on. The money raised by the silent auction helps fund journalism education programs, such as the Texas Center for Community Journalism at TCU and class offerings in a variety of other venues.

John Marling of Oregon-based Pulse Research will give programs centered on market data that shed new light on buying and selling trends in America, and consequently how newspapers can channel their advertising efforts in more efficient and effective ways.

Software, hardware and Web expert Russell Viers will show ways smaller newspapers can adjust their web pages to bring in new money and recapture some revenue that other entities seem to have spirited away.

Sheri Hunter, a media attorney whose working knowledge of intellectual property law is second to none, will give a presentation on copyright law, and what newspapers can do to protect the value of their creative efforts.

Don Richards, a Lubbock-based media attorney and publisher of the Hale Center American, will give members the straight on issues pertaining to the publishing of public notices in Texas. It’s a complicated subject and full of challenges for every Texas newspaper, no matter what size.

Last but not least, Dave Lieber, AKA The Yankee Cowboy, will be the closing speaker. He has tall tales of particular interest to newspaper men and women. He is an award-winning columnist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
