N998101KWe've got 16 people who've volunteered to judge, and they're coming from far and wide. But Georgia Press has such a big better newspaper contest, we need more members follow suit and sign up. Even though the contest judging in Austin isn't until Thursday, Feb. 18, now is a good time to pencil us in and let us know about it.

Reciprocity is a name of the game, for all members who like to enter the contest and compete for awards. We're glad you enter the contest. It's one of many great member benefits. It's an honor to have a "Texas Press Association Better Newspaper Contest Winner" logo on your newspaper's banner, flag, nameplate or masthead.

To get quality, thoughtful judging by the state that will judge your entries, it takes a lot of people working together and with only a few hours to do it. Let's do Georgia a good turn. Call the TPA office in Austin and volunteer to judge. After all, who enjoys getting one of those awkward, waning-hour calls from Mike, Ed or Lolly, urging you to get to Austin when we're short of judges?

We need 24 more judges for the editorial portion of the contest and 15 for the advertising portion. Members, please make it a New Year's resolution to support the Better Newspaper Contest by contacting the TPA Austin office and volunteering to judge. Your participation will yield revelatory ideas for stories, columns, photos and advertising that you will be able to put to use at your newspaper in the coming year.
