The Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas will hold its 2009 Bernard and Audre Rapoport State Conference on Friday, Aug. 21, at the Renaissance Hotel in Austin.

The theme is Opening Tomorrow’s Doors: Meeting Tomorrow’s Challenges.

State Sen. Rodney Ellis, D-Houston, will be the luncheon keynote speaker.

The highlight of the program will be the John Henry Faulk Awards Luncheon and the presentation of the James Madison Award to Sen. Ellis and State Rep. Bob Hunter, R-Corpus Christi.

Both lawmakers were sponsors of the Texas Free Flow of Information Act, which was signed into law earlier this year by Gov. Rick Perry.

This award is given annually to honor those who have demonstrated outstanding commitment and service in upholding the principles of the First Amendment.

The conference program also will include:

Session I: Winners and Losers: Legislative Score Card, with moderator Brian Collister, Investigative Reporter for WOAI-TV, San Antonio. Panelists: Michael Schneider, director of programs, Texas Association of Broadcasters; Doug Toney, editor & publisher, New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung; and Paul Watler, Jackson Walker LLP.

Session II: Social Media and Government: Opening a Pandora’s Box? Moderator: Kelly Guckian, database editor, San Antonio Express-News. Panelists: Amanda Crawford, Open Records Division chief, Office of the Attorney General; Elise Hu, political pReporter & blogger, KVUE-TV, Austin; Ryan McNeill, computer-assisted reporting editor, Dallas Morning News; and, Laura Jesse, Bexar County public information officer.
