Newsmakers March 2006

Pearl Cantrell has been named managing editor of The (Mabank) Monitor. She has been a correspondent for The Monitor since October 2004, and has overseen the editorial department since November.

Rowonna Childers is the new associate editor of the Goldthwaite Eagle. She started her newspaper career at the Cross Plains Review and later worked as a designer at the Brownwood Bulletin.

Allison Davis has joined the Cleburne Times-Review as features editor, replacing Kristi Parker, who left in December. Davis earned a journalism degree from Oklahoma Baptist University in 2005.

John Krueger has been named editor of The Light and Champion in Center. He has served the past seven years in public relations at two NCAA universities and conferences. Krueger was employed previously at The Light and Champion in the mid-1980s and as sports editor from 1988-91.

Sam Kaufman began as the new staff reporter for the Andrews County News. Kaufman began his journalism career with a six-year stint as a general assignment reporter for the Grandview (Wash.) Herald and covered sports for newspapers in California, Arizona and Montana.

The Lampasas Dispatch Record announced three staff changes.

Gail Lowe, editorial-page editor, will become co-publisher with Jim Lowe. In addition to her editorial responsibilities, Lowe serves as page 1 copy editor. She also has administrative and financial duties.

Sports editor Bobby Simons has been promoted to Webmaster for the newspaper’s online edition lampasasdispatchrecord.com. In his new capacity, Simons will work in Internet sales. He also will assist in graphic design for the print edition.

Tony Eierdam, former sports editor of The Graham Leader, succeeds Simons as sports editor. Prior to Graham, Eierdam was sports editor for the Henderson Daily News.

Also assuming new responsibilities is Gabe Wolf, who has done freelance photography for the newspaper for several years.

The Lake Travis View in Lakeway announced two staff additions.

Charles McClure is the new editor. He most recently was publisher of the Madisonville Meteor and was executive editor of The Wimberley View and Dripping Springs Century-News from 2000-05. McClure succeeds Gary Dinges who rejoined the Austin American-Statesman.

Kendra Young is a new staff writer specializing in people-oriented features. She worked as an editorial assistant at the American-Statesman and has interned at D Magazine, Insite magazine and CNN Headline News. She replaces Dot Fowler, who retired but continues to write her weekly column.

P. Christine Mills joined the Seminole Sentinel after leaving the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, where she covered regional news, agriculture, Lubbock County district courts, federal courts and health and medical beats. She has been a journalist for two decades.

The Plainview Daily Herald announced three recent additions.

Melissa Gregg was named comptroller, replacing Sandra Aven who recently was promoted to publisher. Gregg previously was accounting supervisor for KCBD television in Lubbock.

Jessica Diaz recently joined the paper as editorial assistant. She is in charge of obituaries, “This and That” items and assisting the public.

Phillip Barnhard, who will graduate from Texas Tech University in May with a journalism degree, replaced reporter Philip Navarrette, who has accepted a position with the Cleburne Times-Review.

The River Cities Daily Tribune hired a new publisher and press foreman two months after announcing plans to increase its publication schedule.

Richard Stone is the new editor and publisher of the Tribune and free sister paper The Picayune. Stone had been president and publisher of Milam County Newspapers — The Cameron Herald, The Rosebud News and the Thorndale Champion.

His wife, Tia Rae, also joined the Tribune to manage production aspects and handle editorial duties.

The Tribune currently publishes four days a week and plans to launch a four-color Sunday edition in the spring. Billy Parnell, formerly with Granite Printing, came on board as general manager of  sister firm The Picayune Press and is overseeing the press conversion to accommodate the expansion.

Mike Trimble of the Denton Record-Chronicle won the American Society of Newspaper Editors best editorial writing for 2006. Trimble will receive $2,500 during ASNE’s convention April 27 in Seattle. Trimble beat out finalists from The Oregonian, Boston Globe and New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Yvonne Bonnie Ramirez is the recipient of the Texas Farm Bureau’s Excellence in Journalism award for the stories she wrote in 2005 for the Agriculture Today section of the Wilson County News. She since has left the newspaper and currently works in the marketing department of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo.

The San Antonio Express-News announced four newsroom changes.

Veronica Flores is the new metro editor. Flores left the Express-News in October 2002 to join the Houston Chronicle, where she served as assistant national editor and city editor.

Flores replaced Craig Thomason, who was metro editor for 17 years and becomes assistant managing editor/news.

Rob Kaiser, who was assistant managing editor for news, becomes assistant managing editor of the Sunday newspaper and continues his role as writing coach.

Audrey Lee, previously an assistant city editor, has been appointed Sunday editor.

Rick Vanderpool, an individual TPA member and former publisher, was commissioned by the Athens Visitor Initiative Program, Athens Central Business Association and Uncle Fletch’s Burger & BBQ Cook-off to create a Texas hamburger poster collage. Vanderpool has traveled the state and produced other Texas-themed montages.

Dave Wedel, business manager for the Midland Reporter-Telegram, was promoted to general manager. Wedel joined the Reporter-Telegram in 1989 as accounting manager. He was named controller in 1994, and business manager in 2002.
