Newsmakers September 2008

-- Louis Auclair has joined the Navasota Examiner to handle classifieds and news reporting duties. Auclair has freelance writing and graphic arts experience.

-- April Avil left The Eagle in Bryan College Station to become communications director for the city of Bryan. She had been a reporter for three years and previously worked at The Huntsville Item.

-- Nick Cioci joined The Baytown Sun. He graduated in May as a communications major from Lamar University.

-- Whitney Corbell has been named staff writer at The Light and Champion in Center. Corbell replaces David Canley who left to pursue private business. In May, Corbell graduated from Stephen F. Austin University with a bachelor’s in journalism and a minor in English.

-- Tracy Dang joined The Katy Times as the new managing editor. She previously worked for several weeklies within Granite Publications, most recently The Sealy News.

-- Scott Hainline is the new sports writer for The Sealy News. He has been a freelance sports writer for 25 years.

-- Jeremy Halbreich has stepped down from his full-time roles as chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of American Consolidated Media LLC. Halbreich has transitioned to the non-executive chairman role and will remain a director of ACM. Halbreich founded ACM in 1998 and sold the company in February 2007 to Macquarie Media Group. He previously worked 24 years at The Dallas Morning News.

Liam Stewart has been appointed interim CEO of ACM. Stewart has been the ACM asset manager since May 2007. ACM owns 17 paid newspapers in Texas, including the Brownwood Bulletin.

-- Jane Lane is a new reporter for the Cleburne Times-Review. She previously worked at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and the Waco Tribune-Herald and taught journalism part-time at Texas Christian University and the University of Texas in Austin.

-- Chuck Licata was promoted to sports editor of The Liberty Hill Independent. He joined the staff in 2006 as sportswriter.

-- Jerrad Lindenmuth is the new sports editor at the Taylor Daily Press. He came to Taylor after being a sports reporter at the Cleburne Times-Review.

-- Ruben Madrid is the new contract sports editor at the Fort Stockton Pioneer. He is a recent college graduate from Brown University and is an engineer with the Firestone/Bridgestone Test Track Center in Fort Stockton.

-- Stephen Monahan is the first sports editor of The Lindsay Letter. He is a graduate of Texas Tech University.

-- Krista DeAnn Nightengale married David Jonathan Higbee Aug. 9 in Oklahoma. She is employed as associate editor for People Newspapers, publisher of Park Cities People in the Dallas area.

-- Phil Reynolds is the new reporter at the Aransas Pass Progress and Ingleside Index. He had worked for the Port Aransas South Jetty since 2004 and before that with Austin Community Newspapers. He is president of Texas Gulf Coast Press Association.

-- The Rockwall County News announced staff changes. Billie Kingham is the office manager. Kathy Williams is the editor and Kat Donnell is the business editor. Sandy Webber and Michael Moore are customer service representatives. Sheri Lewis is editor-at-large. Matt McGillen and Lary Bump will continue handling Heath and Rockwall sports news respectively.

-- The Star Group announced two staff changes. AJ Narasimhan was named editor of the Burleson Star. He came from the San Angelo Standard-Times, where he served as online editor. Blake Ovard is the group’s new managing editor covering Alvarado, Burleson, Crowley, Joshua, Keene and Everman. Ovard most recently was the managing editor of the Hobbs (N.M.) News-Sun.

-- Rachel Stennet joined The Pampa News as a reporter. She graduated this year from Adams State College in Colorado.

-- Valley Freedom Newspapers in McAllen announced three promotions and the consolidation of its three sports departments.

Marcia Caltabiano-Ponce was named editor of The Brownsville Herald. Caltabiano-Ponce most recently was managing editor of The Monitor where she worked for nearly three decades. Caltabiano-Ponce succeeds Rachel Benavidez.

Steve Fagan has been named executive editor. Fagan will remain as editor of The Monitor, which he joined in 2001.

Benita Mendell, who continues as Monitor general manager, is taking on added duties as regional advertising director. Mendell joined The Monitor almost 10 years ago.

The group also combined the sports departments of its three dailies, The Monitor, Valley Morning Star in Harlingen and The Brownsville Herald. Former Monitor sports editor Wade Baker becomes executive sports editor. Jarret Johnson is the East Valley sports editor. Todd Mavreles is the West Valley sports editor. Dave Favila will serve as senior sports writer and columnist.

-- Jeff Walker returned to the Van Alstyne Leader as sports editor after a one-year hiatus. Also David Mann took over as advertising manager of the Leader and Anna Melissa Tribune. Mann has more than 30 years experience.
