The 2014 Texas Better Newspaper Contest will open on Feb. 10 at BetterBNC and closes March 21. More rules and instructions will be sent at the beginning of February. In continuation with last year's digital format, Texas Press Association will partner with SmallTownPapers again to deliver a faster and more efficient platform to judge entries.
"Once again, we'll be using the digital platform to submit our entries to the Better Newspaper Contest," TPA President, Greg Shrader said.
"My staff felt it streamlined the submission process and found it preferable to pulling dozens of tearsheets. If you've ever judged a contest using digital entries you know how much easier that process is. With this new technology we hope to see record participation in this year's contest."
Each newspaper is encouraged to log onto the online contest platform early to ensure any challenges are resolved before the deadline. An Q+A Blog is available at www.txbnc.tumblr.com. As a reminder, the contest is open to all newspapers that were members of TPA during the entirety of 2013.
Entries are made by member newspapers, not individuals. The content must have been produced by full- or part-time members of the newspaper staff. The entry fees have not changed since last year — it is still only $3 per entry.
This year TPA's entries will be judged by New Mexico Press Association, which represents 50 daily and weekly newspapers. The Better Newspaper Contest swap is a great opportunity for an open exchange of ideas between two state press associations. The NMPA contest will be held in July — further details to come as that deadline approaches.
A brochure detailing the finer stipulations will be mailed out and available at the registration table of the Midwinter Conference in Frisco, Jan. 16-18, 2014.
