You can sell it if...
By Dwight McKenzie, TPA Advertising Directordwightmckenzie

As along as I can remember, I’ve always had somewhat of a competitive spirit.  If you fail, keep trying….try and try again.

That reminds me of a famous quote from Tommy Lasorda, former manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who said, “The only difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person’s determination.”

That quote always reminds me of the movie "Rudy." The moral of that true life story is about an individual whose determination overcame what everyone said he could not do. Never underestimate one’s desire and determination to succeed.

What that says is….you can sell it if you possess these qualities.

1)  Attitude:  Do you believe you can? According to John Maxwell, “Attitude is the criterion for success.  Your attitude is crucial because it determines how you act.”

2)  Confidence: How good do you think you are? Keep in mind there is a difference between confidence and cockiness.  Be confident.

3)  Personality: Are you inviting, friendly and engaging? You must have the ability to have never met a stranger.

4)  Motivator: Do you act or do you wait to be told? Take initiative. You’re in control.

5)  Listener: Do you hear and understand your client’s needs? Be quick to listen and slow to speak.

6)  Challenger: Do you give it your very best – 100 percent?  Or do you look for the easy way?

7) Developer: Will your creativity beat the competition? Was this one better than the last?

8)  Closer: Did you build a relationship for life? Most of us like our "regular” customers, but do you really know them?  Why not?

During my 40-plus years selling newspaper advertising, I’ve found these personal qualities are building blocks to success in what is, and has been, a difficult selling environment.
You can sell it!
