BROWNWOOD – American Consolidated Media, parent company of Brownwood Newspapers Inc., owner of the Brownwood Bulletin, Ballinger Ledger and Winters Enterprise, completed a restructuring of the company on June 30, the Ballinger Ledger reported.

In the transaction, ACM financial investors acquired 90 percent of the ownership and total control of the company. Former owner, Southern Cross Media International Ltd., of Australia, retains 10 percent of the non-voting stock in ACM.

FORT WORTH – In July, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram introduced a new version of its newspaper that included a new design, new equipment for its presses and a higher grade of newsprint. The Star-Telegram is now a more compact size; typefaces have been changed to improve readability and sections have been reorganized and color-coded to make them easier to find.

COLEMAN – The Coleman Chronicle & Democrat-Voice changed its publishing schedule from semiweekly to weekly on Aug. 4. The publication date is now Wednesday instead of Tuesday and Thursday. The newspaper is also larger and has a new look and new features.

DALLAS – The A.H. Belo Corporation, owner of The Dallas Morning News, reported improved results for the second quarter, The Dallas Morning News reported. A.H. Belo had a net loss of $171,000, or 1 cent a share, for the quarter. The company expects its financial results to improve during the rest of the year.


LA VERNIA – Wilson County News Inc. purchased the La Vernia News, a neighboring publication, from the Melenesk family in July. Rollie Hyde of W.B. Grimes and Company represented the Wilson County News.

AUSTIN – The Austin American-Statesman’s Life & Arts section was named one of the nation’s 15 best by the American Association of Sunday and Features Editors. The Statesman’s Life section was one of five honored in the circulation category of 90,000 to 200,000. The Dallas Morning News and Fort Worth Star-Telegram also received top-15 honors.

JEWETT – The Jewett Messenger turned 125 years old in July. A celebration was held at the Roberta Bourne Memorial Library in Marquez.

FRANKSTON – The Frankston Citizen held an open house in July to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Members of the community were invited to attend and bring small items of interest to be placed in a time capsule to hang on the wall in the newspaper office.

ROBSTOWN – The Robstown Record was honored with a historical marker on July 12 for 91 years of service to the community. The state marker was installed in front of the building that has been the home of the newspaper for 80 years.
